If you have had a family member that has recently had an emergency room/urgent care visit, you’ll know that wait times are escalating. From January to June 2023, the average monthly median wait time in all WRHA ER/UC = 2.73 hours. From January to June 2024 the average monthly median wait time in all WRHA ER/UC = 3.62 hours. This data includes Concordia, Grace, HSC (Adult), HSC (Children’s), Seven Oaks, St. Boniface, and Victoria General Hospital. Notably, Seven Oaks and St. B have gotten particularly worse. For Seven Oaks in particular, January to June 2023 was 2.89 hours, whereas January to June 2024 is 4.58 hours (up 1.69 hours). For St. Boniface January to June 2023 was 3.28 hours, whereas January to June 2024 is 5.10 hours (up 1.82 hours). Summer season is considered trauma season on the frontline. This weekend, take care of each other.

Families are confused by palliative care because we (the collective we) keep referring to it as end-of-life care, and the messaging is 95% about planning for death instead of the quality of LIFE being lived. The quotable Shawshank Redemption rings loudly: "Get busy living, or get busy dying." The term palliative is not approachable for understanding... I'd love to see a rebrand to medically-complex care, or something to that effect. Painting all kids on the severe neurological impact spectrum as imminently dying, when many of them live long, high-quality lives does a disservice to their dignity and personhood. We must be careful with the intention and unintended impact of messaging if we want to build a better comprehensive approach to caring for medically complex children and their families. Care planning, considerations for advanced directives, succession planning, and financial planning are all very important considerations, but let's not lose focus of the terms LIVING and LIFE. #PediatricPalliativeCare #SoapboxoftheDay #QualityofLife

After reading Palliative Care Australia's Federal Budget Submission for 2024-25, I firmly believe that leveraging technology in home-based care is a pivotal step towards improving people's quality of life without compromising their safety. Integrating non-wearable wellness monitoring and home-delivered services like chemotherapy or dialysis not only respects patient autonomy but also allows clinical teams to maintain a seamless connection with patients. This approach aligns perfectly with the public's growing preference for receiving care in the comfort of their own homes. This trend needs more support regarding specialist consultations and home care episodes. Furthermore, the potential cost savings from reducing unnecessary hospital admissions are undeniable. The call for adequately funded aged care and NDIS services is not just about enhancing patient care; it's also a financially sensible path for the government. Providing these services at home is significantly cheaper than relying on hospital systems. Based on this document, my perspective is that we must advocate for policies and funding that ensure technology and care come together at home, where they can make the most profound impact. By doing so, we not only honour the preferences of those in need of care but also take a step towards a more sustainable and compassionate healthcare system.

Earlier today, a bill (HB5394) to establish Cardaic Emergency Response plans in Illinois schools passed unanimously out of committee. Now it moves to the full House for consideration. More than 23,000 children younger than 18 experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital each year in the U.S. With more than 2 million people in our schools everyday, it is critical to have an in place to save someone from a cardiac arrest. A Cardiac Emergency Response Plan can increase survival rates by 50% or more through a coordinated, practiced response plan where individuals and teams are trained and empowered to administer lifesaving care until EMS arrives.
