As Paris 2024 draws to a close we have been reflecting on the work we have been doing in East London since London 2012. Since before the London games we have been advising boroughs and London Legacy Development Corporation, providing economic evidence and strategy advice on this generation defining project. We have supported planning policy, advised on economic impact, innovation, night time economy and workspace. We have delivered community engagement, social research and data analysis, driving a deeper understanding of change in London's fastest growing sub-region. A couple of years ago we were asked to support London Borough of Newham to develop a new vision for Stratford Town Centre. This was a different kind of approach, which went beyond a simple masterplan or economic strategy, aiming to put people, place, planet and purpose back into partners work. It considered the need to unite neighbourhoods under 'One Stratford', whilst also working with grain of grassroots sentiment and enthusiasm, to support new approaches. We think Stratford remains one of the most interesting and exciting place to work anywhere in the UK and a pleased with how the new strategy has already started to support new approaches to place and community. Last week there was a gathering of Expert Advisors, including Andrew Haley, with those who have funded and managed the work of the High Street Task Force. This marked the end of this 5-year Minister of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) funded programme, supporting the regeneration of high streets across England. The panel of experts drawn from the Institute of Place Management, Royal Town Planning Institute, Design Council and Landscape Institute, engaged with 149 high streets during the programme. It was wonderful to get a sense of the breadth of the work and hear stories from across the country. Each place is unique, therefore the approaches needed to stimulate revitalisation are specific to their circumstances. Andrew’s work over the last five years has reflected that diversity, including support for the Accelerator Programme for Stepney in Hull; Bedminster on the outskirt of Bristol; Westminster City Council in their work on Edgware Road and Praed Street; Stockport Town Centre; and the coastal towns of Paignton and Felixstowe. The legacy of the Task Force's work will be felt for many years to come, with it highlighting both positive transformation and common approaches to placemaking that hold back change. As a result of ongoing learning from this programme, the Task Force have helped MHCLG launch 10 pilot “high street accelerators”. The city was revitalizing its historic areas and waterfront, aiming to reconnect iconic landmarks like Historic Faneuil Hall with the harbor and nearby wharf buildings. #Creating a Tourist Destination: Boston Light Source played a crucial role in creating a vibrant tourist destination along State Street. Their efforts focused on enhancing the aesthetic appeal and accessibility of the area, particularly around Quincy Market and its newly renovated food court. This initiative aimed to attract both locals and tourists to the historic waterfront district. #Relighting of Quincy Market Food Court: Paul Chabot and Rudy Hopfgarten were actively involved in the relighting project of the Quincy Market Food Court. This project not only improved visibility and ambiance but also contributed to the overall revitalization of the area, making it more attractive for visitors and businesses alike. #Strategic Office Location: The decision to establish Boston Light Source’s office on Commercial Wharf, adjacent to Quincy Market and the waterfront, was strategic. It positioned the company at the heart of the revitalization efforts, allowing them to contribute directly to the area’s transformation and benefit from its growing appeal as a commercial and cultural hub. #Legacy and Impact: The initiatives led by Boston Light Source under Paul Chabot and Rudy Hopfgarten’s leadership left a lasting legacy. Canada and the USA aren't alone in having an affordable housing crisis: Australia is facing the same situation. However, here are two examples of innovative social housing projects that are offering new hope. The Midtown MacPark and Nightingale developments show that affordable housing can be thoughtfully designed, creating vibrant communities where residents feel proud to live. These projects, prioritizing design and community building, stand as models for how we can rethink housing to foster dignity and inclusivity.
