Yesterday I heard a friend (actually boss) complain of how he paid a dev to build a site for him but the site ended up not meeting his expectations, not that he's too demanding; I had to visit the site and I observed that it wasn't that great and as professional as it should seeing that the developer is considered a good one. What baffles me is how its said that the tech field is kind of saturated but yet its still difficult to get someone who can do something well. I guess I'm beginning to understand the pain of HRs and recruiters cause its not easy reviewing hundreds of CV's and finally making a selection only to discover that the candidate selected could not deliver up to expectations. And for those who just need someone to help them develop a website for them, it's not easy pouring through lots of portfolios and sites only to discover that the website built for you wasn't your expectations. I know some companies or clients can be demanding but what about the pain of expectations not being met? As a recruiter or someone who has been in any of these scenarios, how did you feel and what did you do next time? #webdev

This is a project even I personally want to build! In fact, if you build it as a production level project, you could ideally sell it too! This will honestly look great on your resume! Remember to not focus on too many features, build out one feature robustly, launch it, take feedback, iterate, improve and maybe even sell. Too many people are worried about their resumes. Here is the thing: your resume is good, and there is nothing wrong with it. The problem is that it is beneath 200+ resumes. It is pointless to keep improving the resume when no one sees it in the first place. In this job market, you have to be scouted by recruiters. Build something nice in public (not those YT tutorials), you will be noticed. Learning something in public is also great but make sure the learning is not trivial ("what is the output of this?" type of stuff). For starters, you can try building https://lnkd.in/g3VYeyBs. Let's talk about it. There is truth to both, but in our experience, we find the reality to be a hard truth. We are not saying a degree or experience isn't valuable, they are**. It depends on the job. For example, you don't need a degree to be a great software engineer or web developer they take talent! We have seen great people get turned away because their resumes were "confusing". We get it, resumes are a pain to make. However, they can make or break a hiring manager's attention. Lastly, your network is your net worth! CONNECT WITH US. Quick tip for Jobseekers to get ahead of the pack. When a new role comes on at Scouut (and I'd imagine it's the same with most recruitment businesses), we sit and ask the question "Who do we already know?". The next 10-20 phone calls made will be to candidates that we already have relationships with. This happens before any LinkedIn post, advert, InMail, email, or anything else gets presented to the wider market. More than 50% of our roles are filled this way. And for areas where we're VERY connected (JavaScript, for example), it's probably closer to 80%. In other words, jobseekers that aren't open to building recruiter relationships (when they aren't looking for a job) could be missing out on up to 80% of available opportunities when they ARE looking.
