I've been lucky enough to have many great Vets in my life. Both of my grandfathers, several of my friends (including two whom I consider brothers from another mother) as well as many clients. Reflecting on Remembrance Day Today is a day that carries a profound significance, particularly for those of us who have served. As an ex-service member, Remembrance Day isn’t simply a date on the calendar; it’s a solemn reminder of friends, shared hardships, and the true weight of service. It’s a day to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice, who went where others could not, and to remember the families who bore their own sacrifices at home. Service instils values that never fade—courage, loyalty, resilience. These aren’t just words; they’re principles we carry with us long after we’ve hung up the uniform. For me, Remembrance Day is about embodying those values and paying tribute to the lessons we learned alongside our comrades. It’s about striving to be worthy of the sacrifices made by so many before us and those still serving today. As we pause to reflect, I encourage everyone to take a moment to recognise the commitment and service of others, whether in uniform or in their communities. Today is #CivicPrideDay. People who have civic pride help their communities thrive and their hometowns be a better place to live. Civic pride can be demonstrated in a multitude of ways. For instance, tackling issues of public concern, shaping legislation, or other activities that improve the standard of living for or well-being of community members. Not only do Veterans love to serve their county, but community civic pride is also embedded in their DNA. I want to celebrate that Shields & Stripes is able to help these 8 military folks and first responders. I don't share much about the physical, emotional, and mental challenges I had during my time in the military, but after 3 years of being retired, but after reading this post by Steven Nisbet I feel empowered and compelled to say something. Starting at MEPS and continuing through basic, AIT and every single command I supported in my 24+ year career, my leadership told me to keep my medical problems to myself. Being sick was weakness, being injured affected readiness, being depressed would cost me my clearance. I didn't go to sick call, I didn't go on quarters, I didn't report head injuries, I didn't complain about broken bones, numbness in my arms, I minimized SERIOUS medical issues in order to deploy three times, and I never seriously participated mental health therapy. The VA has been a great resource for me to start to undue some of the physical impact my body suffered, but I was never able to crack the mental health code by using VA resources. To me, I felt like an imposter, like how did my trauma compare to that of some of my peers with purple hearts and CABs? How did my trauma compare to the experiences of Vietnam era veterans like my father? After white-knuckling my way through sobriety, and starting to find value in myself as a person, I reluctantly applied for and was accepted into the Shields & Stripes program. It was through their concentrated and collaborative, whole body approach to healing that I was finally able to unpack the container I had filled with trauma, depression, moral injuries, anger, shame, guilt, anxiety, and fear. We all deserve to be whole; to be free of the burdens we carry from our experiences; to be the best version of ourselves. If you are an active duty service member or veteran, or if you are a current or retired LE professional or first responder, you should apply to the program. Today, on Veterans Day, we honor and express our gratitude to all who have served. It’s also a moment for us to reflect on how we can give back to our Veterans after their service. We need to consider how we can do more to address the mental health challenges Veterans face, ensure they receive job training and employment opportunities, and make certain they aren’t left without shelter or the means to buy a home. When our Veterans pass, we must also support their families. One critical yet simple step is requiring the VA to sign the death certificate of a Veteran within 72 hours. Currently, it can take up to 8 weeks for this process. In many cases, a local coroner or medical examiner must intervene for the grieving family. This delay adds unnecessary stress, postpones burial, and hinders access to death benefits and the Veteran’s bank accounts or other assets. As we remember and honor all our Veterans today, let’s commit to supporting them, even after they’re gone. It starts with the simple act of promptly signing a death certificate.
