After two decades in industry, I’ve found the secret sauce and it’s as simple as Alfredo pasta.
Last night my son was craving pasta for dinner and despite all of the reasons why mom couldn’t deliver, he was successful in achieving the goal.
Long story short, here are the four steps that he took:
1) Knowing mom had just cooked the night before, he used data to plead his case.
“𝘔𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘧𝘵𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘥𝘢𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘯.”
2) He anticipated how he could optimize the opportunity.
“𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩, 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘱𝘶𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘻𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘵𝘰𝘰, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯.”
3) Through experience, he’s realized that if mom comes home and “settles in” then the probability of cooking dinner is low.
“𝘐’𝘭𝘭 𝘳𝘶𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘩, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨.”
4) He also knows, cooking the sauce takes time but he sits patiently at the table anticipating dinner’s arrival.
“𝘔𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘺, 𝘐 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘢”.
So what did he teach us?
1 — Obsess over data and find root causes
2 — Group common themes of opportunity
3 — Focus more on execution than strategy
4 — Keep the faith and stay the course
No matter if it’s the dinner table or in your career, these are 4 enablers for leading to success.
Obviously, you need empowered, well trained teammates whom you build trust and invest in, and if you add these 4 steps to your recipe, then I can guarantee you will be rewarded just as he was.
Bon Appétit!
