💡 PR Outreach Tip: Revisit, refresh, resend Just because your original pitch didn’t hit the mark doesn’t mean it’s time to toss your brilliant idea out. Instead of starting from scratch, use these steps to give your campaign a second chance: 🔄 Revisit: Before making drastic changes, look over your pitch with fresh eyes. Is there a key detail or unique angle that could be pushed to the top? Sometimes a simple tweak in how you lead the story can make all the difference. 🔃 Refresh: While you’re revisiting, fine-tune the copy. Are there any repetitive phrases or clunky sentences? Tighten up your messaging. Don’t be afraid to adjust the tone slightly if needed. Small changes can bring new energy to your pitch. ✅ Check Word Count: Length matters! If your pitch is too long, it might overwhelm busy journalists. On the flip side, if it’s too short, it may lack the detail they need. Adjust the word count to fit the style of the publication you're targeting. 👀 Get a fresh perspective: A colleague can offer a valuable second opinion. Fresh eyes often spot things you’ve missed, whether it’s a small typo, awkward wording or a missing key detail. 📨 Resend with a fresh approach: After your revisions, craft a snappy subject line and summarise your article in a couple of sentences. Make sure it’s brief, clear, and relevant to the journalist you're pitching to. Persistence pays off in PR. Stop expecting writers and PR specialists to leverage an "as seen on" marketing strategy for your brand if it lacks a compelling story. There, I said it. I can't tell you the number of times I've been contacted by organizations who think there's some magic spell I can cast on the news media to compel them to write Pulitzer prize-winning articles about them. I'm sure there are PR pros with similar stories (right, Parry Headrick?). Folks, it doesn't work like that. It doesn't matter who I know in the media or whether I have excellent pitching skills if you don't have a newsworthy story. Simply existing isn't a news angle. Publications prioritize newsworthy and timely content that's relevant to their target audience. With fewer journalists and media outlets to pitch, you're competing for limited space with other organizations who also think they're the best thing since sliced bread. Instead of demanding the impossible, work with a content strategist to develop compelling story angles. Sometimes organizations push out the wrong stories because they fail to recognize what interests their ideal customer or what fits into current trends. As a former journalist, I can spot a solid news angle a mile away. I'm also not shy about telling clients when something they're excited about isn't going to interest the news media (and why). I use proven methods to increase the chances of landing a successful pitch. Some of my strategies include: - Setting up news alerts and RSS feeds to monitor keywords, topics, and publications relevant to a client's industry or expertise. - Following beat reporters who cover news relevant to my clients' industries and expertise to gain insight into the stories they prefer to cover. - Monitoring competitors and industry peers to spot gaps in coverage and other potential news opportunities. If you're working with a content strategist or PR pro who guarantees you placement, they're full of something (and solid media connections isn't it). The only way to fulfill that promise is to use pay-for-placement strategies, which tend to turn off consumers. Earned media > paid media. It can just take some time to get results.
