The Vogtle Electric Generating Plant recently celebrated the opening of Unit 4 this year. The nuclear power plant now has 4 reactors and generates a massive amount of electricity. Bonus points for how many homes and businesses all 4 reactors power. https://hubs.li/Q02Gh-Nb0

Bloomberg News 4M followers - 4/29/24 A month after the US offered $1.5 billion to restart one shuttered nuclear power plant, there’s a growing sense among officials in the industry and government that it may not be the last...... More than a dozen US reactors shut down in recent years because they were too costly to operate, struggling to compete against renewable power and plants that burn cheap natural gas......True estimates there may be only five reactors suitable for resurrection. He declined to name them. #nuclearpower #nuclearenergy #energytransition #energypolicy #renewableenergy

Another long article in the Economist about the rising interesting in nuclear energy and SMRs. Most of the big tech firms are interested in direct procurement of this clean energy as are other major users. I remember sitting in a meeting back in 2017 talking about the potential of NB fabricated reactors being used to decarbonize the oil sands. Now I read they are moving ahead with SMRs in the oil sands. Just no mention of New Brunswick. Wouldn't it be interesting if we had a fleet of SMRs powering the world's data centres right here in NB? What would it take?

20 MORE YEARS: Dominion Energy informs the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission of their intentions to apply for a license extension for Millstone Units 2 and 3. If they apply and are approved, the reactors would continue churning out clean power through 2055 and 2065. The two reactors currently generate more than 37% of Connecticut’s electricity and nearly 90% of its clean power. ➡️: https://bit.ly/3SgndPQ

The trend in recent decades towards higher electricity consumption inevitably leads to the question of how this is to be ensured in the future. By shutting down its last remaining nuclear power plants, Germany has embarked on a special path. https://lnkd.in/evEdg4nv Goldinvest.de #uranium

Reliable always on power. Nuclear is a super critical part of an all of the above solution to climate change. (Pun intended)
Constellation Energy Corp has filed a 20-year licence renewal application for the Clinton nuclear power plant in Illinois, which it says would allow the plant to continue providing carbon-free energy to the region until 2047 with adequate market or policy support. https://lnkd.in/dM7HHhFy

Associate Professor Personal and Professional Development Domain, University of Notre Dame Australia - Posts on health, medical education, climate action. Views are my own, not employer.
There are just a few crucially important rules of getting BIG things done. Here's one, based on the global expert on BIG projects, Prof. Bent Flyvbjerg AND his example happens to be.. solar.. One big secret to getting a big thing done on time and on budget is modularity. Think Lego, shipping containers, solar panels. All modular. with these we can build big with speed. That's handy to know, because Australia is in urgent need of doing a lot of rapid energy transition. So solar can be done fast. it is also getting cheaper and cheaper, like batteries.. Which makes it even more strange when you consider the media, ALP and fossil fuel companies are talking non stop about 1. fossil fuel shortages, while exporting our domestic gas, while the media and the LNP are talking about 2. nuclear power, which Bent has demonstrated to have almost the worst record for cost over runs, along with nuclear storage, and the Olympics.
Solar power this century. In 2023 about 450 gigawatts were installed worldwide. To put that in perspective, a fair sized nuclear plant is about 1 gigawatt. #EnergyTransition
