The shields which we build up in childhood to protect ourselves from being hurt can stay with us into adulthood. Now that we are adults, we don't need the weight of these shields weighing us down stunting our growth and success. In the latest episode of the podcast Matthew Head discusses with Lee Povey how natural human behavior is to try and 'fit in', and mentally protect ourselves from external dangers. When we are children we are exposed to the reactions of our character traits and those reactions dictate how we interact with the world and others in it. Typically children with dyslexia are met with a negative reaction which means we create barriers and shields to protect ourselves. As adults, these shields are heavy and exhausting to carry around and are stopping our potential for real success. In the episode, Lee Povey tells us why, as adults, we don't need these build heavy protective shields and once we start to the go and let the guard down, we can start to see real success. Fantastic episode! This is a must listen for anyone in the child protection sector. It covered so much rich discussion: - Moving from agent, to advocate to activist (I'm reflection on what this means in a research context) - 'The hill you are willing to get fired on', where you sit morally in the work, what are your non-negotiables - How you can advocate/activate/challenge in your role - The evidence from blind removal studies I'm so excited to dive into Jessica A. Pryce, Ph.D., MSW 's book for more!

This week’s episode is with Jessica A. Pryce, Ph.D., MSW. We discuss her new book, Broken: Tranforming Child Protective Services. That was just the jumping off point to a rich conversation. You definitely want to tune in to this one. When I first picked up her book I was struck by a framework or process that she introduced. She described it as moving from being an agent of the system to being an advocate and then an activist. We unpack these terms, the process, and where Jessica and I see ourselves at this point in our lives. We also get into a discussion of whether or not child protective services can in fact be transformed. We wrap by touching on Jessica’s Ted Talk and her perspective on termination of parent rights. Are you an agent, advocate, or activist? #podcast #proximity #theproximityprocess #transformation #childwelfare #cps #tpr https://lnkd.in/gW_RYbFs
