Yesterday was miraculous in more ways than one! For starters, I found myself in a room of over 500 people who acknowledged and recognised the importance of trauma-informed practice and care in our local communities at all levels. A breath of fresh air for me, as someone living with Complex PTSD as a result of Adverse Childhood Experiences, who has struggled to find my place in a world I didn't feel I deserved to be part of, or who didn't understand. Secondly, I drove there in rush hour whilst feeling calm and regulated. This may not seem like a big deal, but it's a game-changer to be able to drive to new places without constant fear and hypervigilance, thanks to having the tools to work with nervous system dysregulation. More than that, as I returned home from a long day, I noticed... well, nothing. No muscle tension from being braced all day, no aching jaw from being scared to use my voice, no pounding heart or feeling of dread. Nothing... It's very strange. And very new. A glimpse of a way of being that I've been working hard to reach over these last two years in trauma recovery. It's going to take some getting used to. But I think I like it. #trgm #traumarecovery #traumainformed #cptsd #nervoussystemregulation #adversechildhoodexperiences #strongertogether #strongercommunities #greatermanchester
Amazing to hear all the inspiring work happening across Greater Manchester at the Adverse Childhood Experience and Trauma Responsive Movement event yesterday. Great to see so many people committed to working together to raise awareness, embed trauma-informed practice at systems level and within our workforce, and create resilient communities. #trgm #traumainformed #traumarecovery #resilientcommunities #adversechildhoodexperiences #traumainformedpractice #greatermanchester

Being a parent to 2 Autistic/ADHD daughters I understand the challenges they face (not fully, still learning, we are always learning) but I’m also acutely aware as a HR Director the challenges companies face in providing the right environment for people to shine, with or without disabilities. We are all different and work/perform well in different ways, the best thing for any employer is to try and get to truly understand their employees in a non Judgemental way, work towards and hone their strengths and also help nurture and improve any areas of vulnerability (hate the word weakness). It’s not easy but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.
We are disabled by the world around us not the world within us. Raising awareness and understanding is key to reducing the unnecessary trauma that neurodivergent people face. #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek #NeurodiversityWeek #NCW
