Published ✍️ I am happy to share our latest study “Healthcare self-management support of stroke patients after discharge: A conceptual analysis using Rodger’s evolutionary approach” which is published as open access in the Journal of Advanced Nursing. Like most chronic conditions, when stroke patients are discharged, they are expected to go home and self-manage their condition with their family support system to ensure good outcomes. This task requires special education, training, and support from healthcare professionals. This study defines and identifies the specific role of healthcare providers in supporting the self-management of stroke after discharge. This study also served as the foundation for our ongoing study in Ghana. https://lnkd.in/eWt88C3e

Health and wellbeing of families of critically ill patients - whether paedatric or adult - is so important.

This is a wonderful article about PVT application in nursing. I believe PVT brings a crucial perspective to healthcare with wide implications, not just in the healthcare worker-patient dyad, but systemicly. For example: what are the organizational implications? What needs to be in place for nurses, and other healthcare workers, to embrace practices grounded in the neurobiology of safety? What are the implications for workload? Healthcare environments are fast paced, noisy, overloaded, and high demand, which creates chronic SNS activation. This gets so embedded in organizational culture that it becomes normalized and expected. Yet in order to offer care and cues of safety, healthcare providers need to have access to their own social engagement/ventral vagal system. This has potential widespread (and deep) implications at all levels of the organization as well as with the individual’s development and practice. Curious to hear your thoughts: What would prioritizing a PVT lens in healthcare mean for leaders? How can we begin to bring this evidence based perspective into healthcare workpaces and boardrooms?

Groundbreaking news today to see the introduction of ‘Martha’s rule’ into a selection of English hospitals from April 2024. This is an important step that we at Meningitis Now fully understand and support. Martha Mills, who you may have read about in the media, died from sepsis in 2021 after the concerns of her parents were disregarded by clinicians. For Merope Mills – Martha’s mother – this was a preventable death and Merope has campaigned tirelessly since then.   Sadly, we have seen many cases like this at Meningitis Now, including three that were documented in an official report presented to the then Secretary of State for Health and Care, the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, in 2018 (and which you can read here: https://lnkd.in/eWTSMwcV). Entitled the ‘Meningococcal Working Group Report’, it called for clinicians to “listen to parents, carers and family members and that ‘parents know their child best’ and to record parental views in the patient’s notes, where that was not already done”. It also called on clinicians and health leaders to “reflect on how best to promote a culture where staff feel empowered to challenge within and between professional groupings and across different levels of seniority; and where staff are also open and responsive to challenge and to learning from mistakes and near misses whether via training or other means”. This shows how the issues underlying Martha’s case are sadly nothing new. The fact that the Meningococcal Working Group Report was published over five years ago also shows just how difficult and slow changing culture and practice can be. Thankfully NHS England (and people such as Jane Murkin, John Welch, Matt Inada-Kim) have been working on a series of pilot projects across English hospitals to understand how listening to the worry and concern of patients/carers can become a systematic part of the diagnosis and treatment of people experiencing acute deterioration and how patients and carers can be empowered to speak up when their concerns are not heard. Similar initiatives are happening Wales, thanks to doctors like Chris Subbe. The Patient Safety Commissioner Henrietta Hughes has also led great work in raising the profile of the issue at hand and supporting the present Secretary of State for Health to see the opportunities that improvement can bring to the culture of the NHS and to improving patient outcomes. Honored to author the publication titled "Every Drop Counts: Providing Lactation Support to Breastfeeding Surgical Patients," with co-authors Dr. Rebeccah Dindinger (Collins) and Dr. Michelle Stucky in Nursing2024 Journal. ---- Over half of surgeries in the US are conducted in physician-owned ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). While ASCs provide cost-effective and quality healthcare comparable to inpatient hospitals, they often lack robust support services, including lactation support. Last week our The Royal Women's Hospital University of Melbourne Gandel Simulation Service Manager Franki McMahon spoke at the national Australian College Neonatal Nursing (ACNN) conference as an invited speaker on ‘Let's simulate: strategies and tools for clinicians’. Franki spoke about how Gandel Simulation Service uses a range of techniques for education, quality improvement and patient safety. She highlighted our translational simulation focus and the different ways we use simulation as a tool for improving teamwork and communication and making cultural change. She also covered the use of specific tools such as mental rehearsal cards and some tips to consider when establishing psychological safety and facilitating debriefing. #simulation #pstientsafety #education #qualityimprovement #newbornsafety #translationalsimulation
