Yesterday, our joint venture "ESMC", together with TSMC, Infineon Technologies, and NXP Semiconductors held a groundbreaking ceremony to officially mark the initial phase of land preparation for our first semiconductor fab in Dresden, Germany. 🤝 💬 "The ESMC wafer fab is to be built right next door to our own Bosch wafer fab in Dresden. So now we will be able to watch it emerge and grow with our own eyes. We're looking forward to that, just as we are to collaborating closely with our partners TSMC, Infineon, and NXP. (TSMC) will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its first European plant in #Dresden, Germany, on August 20th. Led by newly appointed Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei #魏哲家, who previously worked at Texas Instruments and STMicroelectronics. This event marks a major milestone in the world’s first chipmaker's global expansion. The new plant, European Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (#ESMC), is expected to start operations by late 2027 and aims to boost sustainable semiconductor production in Europe. Key investors in this €10 billion project include Infineon Technologies, Bosch, and NXP Semiconductors, each holding a 10% stake. In Asia, majority of our expertise is in BE Development and BE Assembly (Process, Equipment and Improvement). WE GIVE UP: From the Top of The World to Only Healthcare #Philips is by far one of the most recognizable #electronics companies in the world. They dominated the electronics space all through the 1900s till 2000s and they’re basically synonymous with light bulbs, cassette, CD, DVD and plasma TVs. But, heading in the 2000s, Philips has had a tough time staying relevant within the electronics space. In fact, Philips even dropped the word “electronics” from their name in the early 2010s. Since then, they have shifted much of their focus to producing healthcare equipment like MRI machines and respirators. The other products that carry their name aren’t even made by Philips. It’s actually made by Chinese companies who bought the branding rights to Philips. This video explains the story of one of the most legendary electronics companies of all time and their fall from grace. Philips had in the 1980s 350000 employees. Now it has approx 60000 As an insider from 1986 till 2006 I will add what the video does not explain and some additional facts: 1. Philips thrived for more than 100 years with #technological #Innovations based on #research and development investments till the 1990s. Since that time Philips reduced substantially it's research investments. 2. Since the 2000s, when the major divestments started, the focus shifted on #shareholder #value like many other companies. Philips divested or spinned off smaller parts also in the 1980/1990s. 3. The board and divisional #leadership shifted from functionally balanced representation to more Marketing & Sales knowing all. 4. Consequently, combining 2 and 3 together the focus shifted on short term gains. Medium to long term initiatives were not really supported or better not pursued long enough to deliver results. E.g. Investments in #SiliconValley by the end of the 1990s were stopped within 5 years. Many of the Philips employees that time ended up as major contributors to very successful companies like #Apple. 5. #Innovators & #Intrapreneurs have been sidelined, left or asked to leave while divesting. 6. Since 2010, any innovations with a few exceptions related to acquisitions (e.g. Coffee Machines) were based on incremental innovations of existing products and systems followed from marketing campaigns with relative low to medium success. 7. From 2000 onwards, leadership scandals up to the president level and other board members were not uncommon. 8. The short term focus was also the reason that significant stakes in #ASML and #TSMC have been prematurely sold. If the shareholding had been maintained would be valued more than 300 billion USD. 9. One of the major mistakes was the delay to introduce CD recordable to protect the content division (Polygram) and instead introduced the dead from arrival DCC (Digital Compact Cassette). We could have started 7 years earlier with CD recordable.... I can add more but I hope ex #colleagues seeing the post can add or comment. Thank you

ST is making an important contribution to the reindustrialization of Europe. Two billion in subsidies from the Italian state also show that the subsidies in Germany are not excessive. A fab for car manufacturers in Europe. “The chip manufacturer covers the entire supply chain at one location. ST wants to produce the material in Catania, manufacture the chips and also take care of testing and packaging.” And so it is also logical to include the backend, which is supposedly too expensive in Europe. Increasing productivity - in Europe - is the right way forward. If you want at least have a chance to compete against the market leader Infineon, you really have no other choice.
