🛑 Where do you think the plastic from your products ends up? Are you happy with the reality it's probably, at least in part, on a beach or in an animal’s stomach (with your branding all over it)? ❓ These are the questions we regularly ask our clients and the truth is no brand ever can really know the answer. Unless, that is, the brand takes ownership for the product at the end of its use and physically collects it and processes it. The complexities of waste management systems on a global and national scale, the diverse technologies employed by waste management companies, and numerous other practical challenges present significant hurdles. As a result, recycling statistics often remain nothing more than hopeful aspirations. We find it helpful to use visuals when working with clients on concepts that can feel very abstract. If you are interested in curating, exhibitions, plastics, sustainable exhibition design, and conservation please check out this open access paper by the Synthetic Collective: https://lnkd.in/gsNHjMA9 This article explores the exhibition Plastic Heart: Surface All the Way Through. Curated by the Synthetic Collective, the exhibition emerged from a scientific study aimed at tracking plastic pellet pollution on the strandlines of beaches of the Great Lakes. This lake system crosses the border of the United States and Canada and contains more than 20% of the world’s surface freshwater reserves. Utilizing this study as a starting point, Plastic Heart also examined the role of plastics in the art world, the challenges of conserving plastics in museum collections, and the potential for art-science collaboration. Importantly, Plastic Heart also aimed for a minimal carbon impact, driving decisions throughout the process to mitigate the energy footprint and waste generated during curation. Using Plastic Heart as a case study, the authors address the strengths and weaknesses of the curatorial approach employed in the exhibition and argue for curatorial strategies grounded in complexity as a method of addressing environmental issues.

TRILUX is working hard to make the future more sustainable. But how can luminaires be made even more durable and efficient? Which components cause the greatest environmental impact? And in which life cycle phase of a luminaire are CO2 emissions actually the highest? Sebastian Knoche, Team Leader of the Lighting Technology Research department, shares exciting insights into our recently completed SUMATRA research project, which was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. Together with the Fraunhofer IZM, Interzero, Inventronics and Kardorff Ingenieure Lichtplanung, we looked for ways to improve the eco-balance of luminaires by using sustainable materials.
