>>There is a personal connection for me with the site of these terrible events yesterday, that have taken more than 150 lives, and more people feared dead as rescue work continues. During the years 1953-1961, I spent time in various tea estates where my father worked in the Nilgiris and Wyanad districts. Names of estates and places like Chundale, Mayfield, Meppadi, Sentinel Rock, Puthumala, Arrappetta, and Chembra Peak flit in and out of my memory banks accompanied by images of green forested sloped of hills and mountains. I recall the Manager's bungalow at the Sentinel Rock estate where we spent four years, perched on a hilltop, with a commanding view off the surrounding rolling landscape. >>To the west towered the ramparts of the Camel's Back ridge, rising to over 6000 feet elevation, to the north Mundakkai, while to the east lay Puthumala, Soochipara Waterfall, the river, and the lone bridge across it that has now been washed away. Even in those days, heavy rainfall led to roads being cut, and life being affected. I recall we were marooned for several days once due to the bridge collapsing under a heavily loaded truck carrying timber logs. >>The intervening years have seen the influx of settlers into Wyanad from the southern districts of Kerala and other parts, with forests being replaced by farmland. The new roads, house constructions on the slopes, and quarrying are of more recent vintage, and probably have caused most of the damage as has been extensively documented by the Gadgil Committee report. The clear recommendations of this report have been largely ignored, and were mostly discredited by local political parties and civil society organisations, who were mostly on the side of 'development'. >>The devastating landslides since 2018 happening almost every year appear to not have had any effect on public perceptions and political statements. The Hume Center for Ecology and Wildlife Biology at Kalpetta that was supported by grants from the ANAHA Trust run by Vinita and me focused on this issue, and produced excellent work studying the problem, and looking for ways of predicting landslides. Be involving the local people, the Hume Center led by its energetic founders C K Vishnudas and his wife Dr Suma, developed such a forecast system that was based on rainfall data collected regularly by local volunteers from key points across high risk areas. >>I am sure that alerts of high rainfall leading to saturation of soil in the upper slopes above Mundakkai and Chooralmala were given to the authorities in the days prior to the actual disaster. It is necessary to conduct a forensic inquiry into what action was taken. Otherwise, as the the wise man said: those who do not learn from history, are doomed to repeat it!
