It is interesting that two black men from different sides of the world should make such similar statements. It is equally interesting that they were both Reverend gentlemen. For Reverend Martin Luther King Jnr, you need darkness to see the stars and for Bishop Desmond Tutu, hope enables you to see the light, despite the darkness. I thought about the constant battle between good and evil, and how they are represented as light and darkness. I also considered the similar contrast of knowledge and ignorance which are also represented in the same way. I wondered if both gentlemen, who had seen their fair share of struggles and challenges were trying to tell us something else. Did they think that without the darkness of trials and tribulations, we are not likely to see or feel the relief of light? Did they feel that it was necessary to go through both experiences to understand the depth of the contrast, so that we would appreciate the light when it comes? The fact is that light literally dispels darkness and helps us see our way round a dark space. Light is also often described as hope, which brings illumination to dark situations, shines a way forward and guides us through challenges and towards positive outcomes. When we talk about there being ‘a light at the end of the tunnel’ or ‘lightening the atmosphere’, are we not referring to being optimistic and hopeful? At the end of the day, does light not uplift the spirit and create a sense of awe and wonder in sacred spaces? And is the darkest day of the year not followed by increasing daylight? This week may the stars dispel all darkness and twinkle for you with hope and possibilities. #mondaymotivation #happynewweek

Wow Black History Month and Reggae Month in one - cultural and history overload! Many people ask why we have to celebrate black history. Quick answer - because no one else is and everyone needs to have their story told. It's the same thing with reggae. I come from a small nation that punches way above its weight and a lot of our punch comes from our music. This month I want to stretch my thinking and learn some lessons from popular reggae songs and some history. I am not sure that I have a whole month in me but let's see how far we go....... Day One! No Woman nuh Cry by Reggae Legend the late Robert Nesta Marley. At long last we are paying attention to mental wellness. According to the National Library of Medicine "It is increasingly being recognized that the mental health of employees is a crucial determinant in their overall health and that poor mental health and stressors at the workplace can be a contributory factor to a range of physical illnesses like hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular conditions, amongst others. In addition, poor mental health can also lead to burn-out amongst employees, seriously affecting their ability to contribute meaningfully in both their personal and professional lives". So how is mental wellness at your workplace? Are the women (and men) crying out for help? Do you have facilities in place to support them? Do they know about these resources? Can they use them without being shamed? Do your leaders know how to recognise when people are crying out for help? Where do you score on this list and what do you need to do?
