I was only talking about these types of properties yesterday with a learner. It is interesting that these pre-fabs only had a suggested lifespan of 10 years here yet we are 70 years down the line with people still living in them. Yes there are issues with some of the materials used but surely we have learnt from that and are able to construct something similar to help address the housing shortage we see today.
Birmingham was the second most heavily bombed city in the UK during the Second World War, with more than 12,000 homes destroyed. Over 4,000 temporary homes, or prefabs, were erected at sites across the city as part of the Temporary Housing (Emergency Factory Made Homes) programme. 🛠️ These detached prefab homes in Moseley were built from cream corrugated sheeting, with a corrugated pitched roof. They had two bedrooms, fitted kitchens and bathrooms which were a novelty at the time, and they also had gardens to grow flowers and vegetables. Although only supposed to last for 10 years, many are still standing today and 16 of the prefabs in Wake Green Road were listed at Grade II in 1998. 🙌

When we wrote a robust set of design guidelines for Spokane's skywalks, we faced many of the same biases. A number of critics (including an association of business owners) thought that skywalks merely robbed pedestrian vitality from the streetscape. I posited another theory, that it was the internalization of retail at the second level of block interiors that was the sole reason for street-level retail vacancies - and that pedestrian bridges merely doubled the pedestrian network. By obscuring the street-level access points and by allowing skywalks' aesthetic appeal to be reduced to glazed "hamster tubes", the city had served to facilitate a separate economy between internal & external retail. The property owners who fund skywalks are merely seeking to increase their pedestrian-to-retail linear footage ratio within their limited holdings, hardly a justification to reduce street facing retail lease space. Rather, in exchange for allowing private development over publicly owned right-of-way the city failed to provide proper guidance and development requirements. Street level access, pedestrian orientation, wayfinder signage, engaging aesthetics (including artistic lighting), are all now development requirements for Spokane skywalks. What is the United Brotherhood of Carpenters? Not only is the UBC an organization of brothers and sisters that have come together for a greater good, workers rights, a fair wage, and a better life…it is a legacy. What is a legacy? A legacy is something that lasts for generations and generations to come, if we choose to believe in it. A legacy which was fought for, bled for, and died for. As a second generation carpenter, I, myself must carry on my father’s legacy…but it is much deeper than this. As brothers and sisters of the UBC, we must build upon the legacy of old. We must not forget where we started but also we must focus on what’s ahead and what we are becoming. Although the destination seems far, we must not focus our attention solely on where we are going, but where we are growing. Going forward , we must keep our heads on a swivel and our boots on the ground to see real change. As Peter McGuire said, organize, agitate, and educate. Without these three components, we risk compromising our entire organization. We must not sit back and grow complacent, we must come together collectively with our ideas, values, training, and positive attitudes. This will allow us to grow the market share, secure better benefits, improve diversity, and ultimately build one of the greatest union organizations in the world. #centralmidwestcarpenters #unionstrong #carpentersunion
