One of the key things for me that Biophiic Design can help mitigate, is plastic pollution. If we are designing more with a focus on nature and natural patterns, we have to be choosing more sustainable options. We should be doing that whatever our practice is, but Biophilic Design helps us explain why we are choosing materials to our clients, for health and wellbeing of people AND planet. 🌎 What do you think?

Plastic pollution has significant impacts on the marine environment: Entanglement: Marine animals such as seals, sea turtles, birds, and whales can become entangled in plastic debris, leading to injury, suffocation, reduced mobility, and even death. Ingestion: Many marine species mistake plastic for food and ingest it. This can cause internal injuries, blockages in digestive systems, and malnutrition. It can also lead to bioaccumulation of toxic chemicals present in plastics, which can move up the food chain and ultimately affect human health. Habitat Damage: Floating plastics can transport invasive species across oceans, potentially disrupting local ecosystems. Larger plastic debris can smother and damage coral reefs and other sensitive habitats. Chemical Pollution: Plastics can release harmful chemicals and additives (such as bisphenol A, phthalates, and persistent organic pollutants) into the water. These chemicals can leach into marine environments, affecting marine organisms and ecosystems. Microplastics: As larger plastic items break down into smaller fragments called microplastics, they become pervasive in the marine environment. Microplastics can be ingested by a wide range of marine organisms, from plankton to fish to larger predators, causing harm at multiple levels of the food chain. Economic Impact: Plastic pollution can affect industries such as tourism and fisheries, as degraded habitats and contaminated waters diminish recreational opportunities and reduce fish stocks. Aesthetic and Cultural Impact: Plastic pollution diminishes the natural beauty of marine environments, impacting tourism and cultural practices that rely on clean and healthy oceans. Addressing plastic pollution in the marine environment requires coordinated efforts globally, including reducing plastic production and consumption, improving waste management and recycling infrastructure, and promoting sustainable alternatives to plastics.

📜 The international legally binding instrument on #plastic pollution serves as a crucial mechanism for navigating the intricacies of the global plastic pollution crisis and fostering the development of evidence-based policies to end plastic pollution. The Science-Policy Interface report calls for establishing effective institutional arrangements that ensure interactions between the plastics instrument, the Science-Policy Panel, the multilateral environmental agreements and other relevant structures. 🔗Give it a read here: https://lnkd.in/dp87T9H7

As the EU-funded Water and Environment Support (WES) project comes to a close, it invites you to a short Webinar on tackling plastic pollution, on the 31st of October 2024, from 13:00-15:00 CET (or 14:00-16:00 EET). The WES Webinar was prepared under one of the WES regional activities (RE-9-REG, RE-10-REG, HE-5-REG), addresses to stakeholders and aims to: Provide a short update on where the global and regional efforts on tackling plastic pollution stand; Share some of the project’s experiences, successes and resources with the wider Mediterranean community working on how to address the challenge of single-use plastics and effective plastic waste management. Here is the Agenda: https://lnkd.in/duz_Qq3u Participate via this zoom link: https://lnkd.in/dgUE_bh4 For more information on the WES regional activities (RE-9-REG, RE-10-REG, HE-5-REG): https://lnkd.in/dx56KKNA #WESproject #Webinar #plasticwastemanagement #plasticpollution #protectionenvironment #Mena #sustainability #bestparactices #Mediterranean #regional
