We are heartbroken by the devastation caused by the Los Angeles County wildfires. And, as the fires continue to rage, it may be weeks – or longer – before we understand the full scale of destruction. In response, CBFF and California Community Foundation have partnered to launch the Black LA Relief & Recovery Fund. This Fund will support community organizations on the ground working to meet the immediate and long-term needs of Black communities displaced by the wildfires. Historically Black communities, especially in Altadena and Pasadena, have been hit particularly hard by this disaster. These neighborhoods, once places of promise and opportunity for middle-class Black families unable to purchase homes in other parts of LA because of racist covenants and redlining, are no longer. Our communities need us now more than ever. Join us in standing with directly impacted Black communities by donating at www.pledge.to/BlackLA or texting BlackLA to 707070.

Celebrating Black Philanthropy Month: A Call to Action August is Black Philanthropy Month, a time to honor and elevate Black philanthropy throughout history and today. It's a moment to recognize the impact of giving within Black communities and explore meaningful ways to support causes that make a difference. I might be biased, but Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS)/USA is a powerful way to celebrate and contribute! JRS is dedicated to serving refugees and displaced people globally, with a strong focus on Africa. Programs provide emergency assistance, healthcare, mental health and psychosocial support services, education, and livelihoods training to those in need, embodying the spirit of compassionate and impactful philanthropy. Here’s how supporting JRS aligns with the goals of Black Philanthropy Month: ♥ Global Impact: JRS’s work directly benefits communities in 58 countries by providing essential services and support to those displaced by conflict and crisis. ♥ Empowerment Through Education: JRS educational programs offer refugee children and adults a lifeline, giving them the tools to rebuild their lives and create brighter futures. ♥ Commitment to Human Dignity: JRS’s approach is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves respect and a chance to thrive, reflecting the values of equity and justice central to Black philanthropy. Let’s celebrate by making a meaningful impact by supporting JRS’s initiatives in Africa through the gift of education, advocacy, volunteering, or spreading the word about JRS’s impactful work. https://lnkd.in/ehcVnig3

“Since 2021, the Federation has helped our community obtain more than $6.3 million in national Nonprofit Security Grants. This is a unique value-add that is only able to be accessed through our comprehensive approach to security,” said the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston’s president and CEO Renée Wizig-Barrios. https://ow.ly/ao5O50UAxtA

This book has an intriguing title! #NFL #NBA #MLB #WorldAthleticsIncludingDistanceRunningAndFieldEvents
Emmy-nominated educator & producer. I use (Black) historical narratives, a hate crime experience & antiracist principles, to teach cultural awareness, SEL, DEI & ESG. Public Teacher. 900K + across all platforms.
🚨I’ll be real with you, I really want this book, my first released with a publisher, to be a New York Times bestseller, but that March 11th release date feels so insignificant now with everything that’s going on in the world. For example, this week we’ve all seen the damage those wildfires have caused to our family in the Los Angeles region. So yeah, I planned to announce the release of my book today with 60 days until its release, but truthfully, I don’t feel right asking you to purchase a copy unless you are also committed to donating to Black families that have been displaced in Altadena, CA. If you can’t afford to do both, PLEASE make the choice to donate. My book can wait. At its core, the message of my book is this: After dealing with a hate crime that went viral online, and fighting for justice, I reflected and realized that by studying the true stories of my history throughout my life, I was able to gain pride, ambition, self-determination, the strength to fight, and the realization of the importance of community. In short, my book informs us that during this moment we must come together to support each other like we always have, because those in power likely won’t. So, check this out, to donate to Black families in Altadena, check the comments for a link. After that’s done, you can check those same comments for a link to purchase my book if you choose. Thanks for all of your support thus far. If you support me, it’s imperative that you show support to my broader community as well. 🚨ONE MORE THING: If you choose to support this release, please explore purchasing my book through an entity that is NOT Amazon. For example, a Black-owned bookstore, a local bookstore, BookShop.org, Books-A-Million, Target, or Barnes & Noble, etc.

Patronizing a black business is not charity. Stop acting like you’re doing them a favor. The value system of black business needs to change.

If you are able to offer assistance, whether through volunteering or monetary contributions, here is a well-organized document containing valuable resources and actionable ways to directly support families in need.
💔 There are now over 120 families - victims of the Eaton Fire in Altadena, CA listed in our spreadsheet who are in need. Many heartbreaking stories like this one are emerging, coming straight to our phones and inboxes... "The home in question belongs to my grandmother—it’s the house I grew up in, and it holds deep generational significance for our family. John and Augusta Bohannon, originally from Meridian, Mississippi, moved to Altadena in search of opportunity. Augusta broke barriers as one of the first Black nurses in Los Angeles, and together they purchased the home in 1965, just a year after it was built. This home has been a cornerstone of our family’s history, where they raised their children and grandchildren. It is not just a property to us—it is their legacy. Unfortunately, the day after we learned the home was destroyed, we were also informed that there was no fire insurance on the property. Everything was tied up in the home’s equity, and now we are left with nothing and no means to rebuild." Please help where you can: https://lnkd.in/gHbHUQxc Tomorrow we are having a call with GoFundMe to further help these folks find a way forward. So thankful for Kimberli Samuel and the many people who are helping to find these fundraisers and illuminate the need.

Today through Wednesday, I’m matching all donations to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum's The Never Forget Fund. It's been 23 years since the 9/11 attacks, and the bravery, compassion, and resilience we saw that day and in its aftermath are still inspiring. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is dedicated to honoring those who were killed, and the first responders, recovery workers, and volunteers who rushed to help others. It’s a mission to which I remain deeply committed, especially as new generations grow up knowing the history only through the stories that we share. https://lnkd.in/eWKy-rHF
