Clara Schumann’s father was a tyrant, but he got one thing right. 🧐 Friedrich Wieck was a pretty beastly fellow. He’d scream at his nine-year-old son practising the violin and say, “You wretch, you scoundrel, is this the way you try to please your father?” It's no surprise that his daughter, Clara, married Robert Schumann the day before her 21st birthday to escape that household! But he did get one thing right. ✅ He was a firm believer in personalised learning, particularly when it came to music education. He had 6 children, but not all 6 became musicians. Some he actually encouraged not to! 😲 But for Clara Schumann, who would later become one of the most distinguished pianists of the Romantic era, he devoted everything to her. He created a bespoke music education plan for her, emphasising the enjoyment of music-making over harsh discipline and drills. Not satisfied with only practical piano, violin, and singing lessons, he also organised for music teachers to cover theory, harmony, composition and counterpoint! An overkill for most people! 😅 But recognising that everyone is unique, capable of learning at different syllabuses at different paces, and has individual learning styles, is fundamental to creating a rounded music education. New article in The Critic co-authored with musicologist Eva Moreda Rodriguez, building in part upon earlier work and thought from both of us. Whilst there is plenty value in academia and scholarship engaging with practice, there is a real danger with too-great an elision of the distinction. In some ways the values of critical, dispassionate inquiry associated with scholarship are at cross-purposes with those of self-promotion and conformity often associated with practical work. The article also includes material on the reasons for the growth in the number of practitioners in UK academia, and in the case of music, how this can work to marginalise scholarship. Also on the field of contemporary composition, whose practitioners have a representation in academia which hugely exceeds any student interest, on the cult-like veneration of John Cage in music academia, as one who legitimises removal of teaching of basic composition skills, and empty rhetoric about ‘creativity’ divorced from technique. https://lnkd.in/eg98e6mC
