New product: Savinelli Punto Oro Corallo 316 KS Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked - Available at MBSDpipes.com It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously produced high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist. There are few pipes in Savinelli’s catalog – old and new – that are as sought after as the Punto Oro in the Corallo di Mare finish. It might best be compared to Dunhill’s Tanshell line; both employ a virgin briar finish with very minimal staining, which over time, much like a meerschaum pipe, develops a bronze patina; both are rare, though the Punto Oro Corallo is rarer, being a subset of the Punto Oro line, rather than a line unto itself; and both often have pipe-smokers jumping over each other to get one. While the Tanshell is sandblasted, however, the Punto Oro Corallo is rusticated in the manner of sea coral, as the name suggests. This particular Corallo was sent to us via our trade-in program. The previous owner never got around to smoking it, and so it remains completely unsmoked. Also included with the trade-in was this Corallo box, including promotional literature for the line. Single barrel whiskeys are rare in Scotland due to time constraints and blending preferences, but Balvenie, Glendronach, Highland Park, Glenallachie, and Ardnamurchan offer notable single cask expressions. • Glendronach's Private Selections program, led by master distiller Rachel Barrie, carefully selects the best casks for bottling, while Highland Park and Glenallachie also release limited single cask offerings. • Ardnamurchan, despite its recent establishment in 2014, has a robust single cask program, reserving its bottlings for key supply chain partners and dedicated whisky clubs. What Is Clocking Bourbon Barrels?
 Ever heard of clocking a bourbon barrel? 🥃 During our visit to The Bardstown Bourbon Company, we learned all about this essential skill in the bourbon-making process. Clocking involves rotating a 500-pound barrel so the metal hoops align with the wooden rails, and the bung (the barrel’s plug and weakest point) is positioned at 12 o’clock—or ‘bung up.’ Placing the bung at the top prevents leaks caused by pressure buildup inside the barrel during the aging process, ensuring a secure seal as the bourbon matures.
 The Bardstown Bourbon Company team demonstrated their expertise while preparing for the World Championship Bourbon Barrel Relay, where handlers must roll barrels with precision—ensuring the bung is correctly aligned and the branding (or ‘money side’) is perfectly visible on the left. Any misaligned barrel adds extra time to the tea’s overall run, making precision and consistency critical to success.

For this installment of our producer series, meet Miguel Díaz Martínez, a 5th generation mezcalero hailing from San Andrés Niño, Oaxaca, Mexico. As a maestro mezcalero with over three decades of experience under his belt, Miguel's had a front row seat to the ebbs and flows of mezcal and the changes its faced throughout the years. Despite the pressures of a booming industry to abandon traditional methods in favor of rapid, mass production, Miguel is working hard to maintain the customs and processes that make mezcal the beloved spirit it is. This includes implementing new technologies that maintain the integrity of his productions and opening his palenque (distillery), San Andrés, to other producers who believe in the same spirit of authenticity. Named after his hometown, Miguel rents his palenque to locals who cannot afford to buy a palenque of their own and to those who need more space to meet production demands. "It's a huge inheritance that our ancestors have left us, and we have lived off of it. So, it's good to rescue it and not let it be lost," he explains. "I like to share my knowledge so that the knowledge of mezcal keeps growing because if one day I die and I take the knowledge with me, well, I won't leave anything. No legacy, no heritage for the community."
