Closed for Renovation!!! A masterclass in reframing perspective… I arrived at the Kamloops Delta this week and found that they only had one elevator operating. My initial thought was, you guessed it, not great. But then I saw this poster beside the elevator bank and immediately changed my perspective. Think about this for a moment, nothing changed. Elevator rides might still be delayed and possibly crowded, however the hotel took the opportunity to gamify the experience and add some thoughtful proactive touches. They invited guests to track their steps and offered matching Bonvoy Points, they created a refreshment station with snacks and beverages to reward all of the hard work of climbing stairs, they put signage at each floor that spoke about the contest and apologizing for any inconvenience. Think about this next time you see a “closed for repair” sign duct taped to an elevator door. In fact, think about the way that you prepare your own clients for experiences that may cause friction for them… get ahead of them or let them experience disappointment.
