On this Ninth day of Black History Month, we highlight April Valentine—a 31-year-old Black woman who, filled with hope for a smooth delivery, faced a heart-wrenching fate at Centinela Hospital in California. Despite her preparations, hospital staff allegedly dismissed her pleas, denying her doula and neglecting her during childbirth, leading to her untimely death on January 10, 2023. Nigha Robertson, April's partner, shared the harrowing experience with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, sparking rallies and the Justice 4 April Instagram page to demand accountability. The Department of Health and Human Services is investigating, with potential consequences for Centinela, including fines or license revocation. During the Board of Supervisors meeting, advocates for April Valentine highlighted Centinela Hospital's reputation within the community as one of the "worst hospitals in the county" for Black and Latina mothers. Past legal judgments and recent nurse protests further underscore concerns about the hospital's practices and conditions. The broader context of rising maternal mortality rates in the US, particularly affecting Black women, adds a somber backdrop to April Valentine's tragic story. This crisis extends beyond individual tragedies. It highlights the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in healthcare systems, policies, and practices to address racial disparities in maternal care. The rising tide of Black maternal deaths demands immediate attention, advocacy, and systemic change to ensure that every mother, regardless of race, receives equitable and quality healthcare during the vulnerable period of childbirth. It's a call to action for a collective commitment to safeguard the lives and well-being of Black mothers, fostering a healthcare system that leaves no room for such heartbreaking disparities. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackExcellence #BlackWomen #BlackHistory #MaternalHealth #BlackWomenHealth #HealthEquity #BlackMaternalHealth #CelebrateBlackWomen #WomensHealth #BlackVoices #BlackHistoryMatters #MaternalMortality #EmpowerBlackWomen #HealthForAll #BlackHistoryInTheMaking #MaternalJustice

✨ Family, Friends, Neighbor (FFN) Caregiver Appreciation Week! ✨ Today's theme: Supporting FFN Caregivers With Policy Efforts FFN caregivers are the backbone of child care for millions of working families. Yet, they often go without the resources, recognition, and support they need. It’s time for our leaders to step up and include FFN caregivers in local, state, and federal policies. BlackECE believes that policy changes are essential to ensure that Black caregivers and child care providers receive the compensation, protections, and support they deserve. Through our Lift Every Voice coalition, we’ve taken Black child care providers from all across California to the state Capitol to advocate directly with legislators for policies that will uplift Black families and caregivers. We’re amplifying our voices so that the next generation of Black children grows up in environments that are not only safe but culturally affirming. 🏛️💼 We need more leaders to recognize that Black child care providers, especially FFN caregivers, are critical to the well-being of our families. The time for change is now! 📢 What experiences have you had as a Black child care provider or Black parent that have prompted your thoughts on the change that needs to take place? Share your story using #FFNAppreciationWeek. #BlackECE #FFNCaregivers #LiftEveryVoice

#BlackHistoryMonth #ReclaimingNarratives #Day12 Reclaiming the Sisterhood Throughout Black history, sisterhood has been a powerful force, enabling Black women to support one another and navigate society’s challenges. It’s more than friendship; it’s about building bonds that foster resilience, empowerment, and collective progress. Historically excluded from spaces of influence, Black women created their own communities—safe havens for sharing stories, offering support, and fighting for justice. From abolitionist movements to civil rights and today’s advocacy, sisterhood has been key to collective action. Reclaiming sisterhood honours this legacy. It’s about nurturing friendships that create care and solidarity, celebrating each other’s victories, and offering support during challenges. Sisterhood reminds us we are stronger together, and it empowers us to reclaim our narratives, define ourselves, and resist forces that divide us. In Black history, sisterhood has been an act of defiance and resilience. By continuing to nurture these bonds, we reclaim our stories and reinforce that the strength of our community lies in our connections. Sisterhood is our shield, our voice, and our power. #SisterhoodStrength #CommunityCare #EmpoweredTogether
