Types of personal pension: There are different types of personal pension. They include: 💼Stakeholder pensions - these must meet specific government requirements, for example limits on charges. 💼Self-invested personal pensions (SIPPs) - these allow you to control the specific investments that make up your pension fund. 💼You should check that your provider is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), or the Pensions Regulator if it’s a stakeholder pension. Choosing who manages your investments depends on your preferences, financial goals, and the level of involvement you desire. PLSA has published a set of case studies demonstrating how LGPS, private sector DB pensions and DC pensions are already thinking about private markets investing. TL:DR: Generally, UK pensions associate less-liquid investments with a broadly common set of benefits and drawbacks: They offer a wider set of investment opportunities and benefit from an attractive risk-adjusted return profile with inflation-protection characteristics. But they also have a higher governance burden, particularly regarding DD requirements, liquidity monitoring and cash flow management. Where they differ is in implementation, which varies widely by investor type. At one end of the spectrum, the report cites a DC scheme building a custom fund-of-one LTAF, managed as a multi-strategy fund of funds with some co-investments. At the other end, there is big DB scheme which has moved away from ‘alternatives’ as a distinct allocation basket, instead thinking of ‘private equity’ and ‘private credit’ as extensions of their equity and credit investments. The UK investment landscape is experiencing a confluence of tectonic shifts: changes in UK growth policy; DB-to-DC; the place-based impact investing movement; and product development innovation from asset managers.
