Did you know? Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans were freed in Galveston, Texas. 📅 Two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers brought news of freedom to Texas, marking the true end of slavery in the U.S. Juneteenth is a time to celebrate freedom, reflect on our history, and honor the resilience of African Americans. It's also a day to educate ourselves and others about the struggles and triumphs of African Americans throughout history. Join in the celebrations by attending local events, supporting Black-owned businesses, and learning more about African American history. 🫡 June 19, 1865, federal troops went to Galveston, TX to ENSURE that over 250,000 enslaved people be freed although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863– TWO and a HALF years before Juneteenth. 😠 Information was selfishly withheld regarding the emancipation so farmers could ride out harvest season— eventually, those enslaved were freed. 🙌🏽 Slavery was officially abolished via the 13th amendment in December of that year. 🗓️ Texas became the first state to make Juneteenth an official holiday in 1979. 🎊 Congress passed a resolution to make Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021 and it was signed by President Biden June 17, 2021. 🥹 Freedom looks and feels differently for everyone— This moment in history marks a critical turning point for Black persons — but the second and third order effects of slavery remain embedded in systemic frameworks whether ideologically or institutionally. 🤲🏽 This day is a day of celebration and also a reminder that there is still work to be done to ensure equity and equality for those still enduring the adverse impacts of this period in our Nation’s history. https://lnkd.in/e62mP9Sr

None of us are #free until all of us are free! Today, we commemorate #Juneteenth, a pivotal day in American history marking the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing news of #freedom to the last enslaved African Americans—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Juneteenth is not only a celebration of freedom but also a recognition of the resilience, courage, and contributions of Black Americans. It's a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice, and an opportunity for us to reflect on how far we've come and the work that still lies ahead.
