Did you know about Marian Croak? Did you know she was born on May 14, 1955 in New York City? Did you know she is one the first black women in the United States to be inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame for her development of over 200 patents to date? Did you know that being inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame is among the highest honors for inventors, and includes members such as Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and the Wright brothers? Did you know that Of the Hall of Fame's 610 inductees, just 48 of them are women and only 30 are Black? Of the 30 that are black, only one other member is a black woman besides Ms. Croak: Patricia Bath, an ophthalmologist who created a device used during surgery to easily remove cataracts. So out of the halls over 600 inductees, only two are black women. This makes her membership rarer than the late great Kobe Bryant passing the ball in the mid 2000s Did you know that of the more than 200 patents to her name, Croak most notably developed Voice over Internet Protocol, which converts voice data into digital signals that can be transmitted over the internet, rather than through phone lines like in the early days of the internet. This technology that has innumerable and important uses in our everyday lives but did you know critics initially called it an impractical toy? Did you know it makes things like zoom and other remote work possible? That it allows for the text voting for American Idol? and even made Hurricane Katrina donations possible. So without her, we couldn’t FaceTime, work from home, vote for Ruben studdard or Clay Aiken, or start go fund mes Did you know she led a team that brought broadband to developing countries in Asia and Africa, building, for example, public wi-fi in railroad stations in India? Did you know she also works on racial justice efforts at Google, and continues to mentor women and young girls in engineering to this day? Well, now you do.
