Good News Story. Safety Improvements Made to Pollock Pines Crosswalk Where Preschoolers Were Hit by Van In Pollock Pines, California, safety upgrades are underway to make the streets safer for everyone, especially young children. Over a year ago, a tragic accident occurred when five preschoolers were hit by a utility van while crossing Pony Express Trail near Oak Street on a school field trip. This alarming incident highlighted the need for better pedestrian safety measures in the area. Now, thanks to efforts by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors, significant safety improvements are being made. Rapid flash crosswalks have been installed near the site of the accident, along with three others on Pony Express Trail, to alert drivers and protect pedestrians. These upgrades are part of a broader project approved in October 2023, which also includes improved sidewalks, better bike and pedestrian access, and enhanced ADA accessibility. Residents and local leaders, such as those from the Pollock Pines Elementary School district, welcome these much-needed changes, believing they will make a real difference in keeping families and students safe. How safe are our boarding schools? In the wake of the deadly fire, that has claimed 21 young lives, in Hillside Endarasha Academy! I went back to the safety standard manual of schools, to check what it stipulates! Thus it states; ⏸️For dormitories: 🔥Space between beds to be 1.2m and pathway space/corridor 2m! 🔥 Sharing beds is prohibited! 🔥 Doorways at least 5ft wide and open outwards! 🔥Doors NEVER to be locked from outside when learners are inside! 🔥A door at each end and additional emergency exit in the middle, clearly labelled 'Emergency Exit.' 🔥 Windows should be without grills and open outwards! 🔥 Functioning fire extinguishers and alarms placed at each exit! 🔥Bunk beds should be firm and fitted with side grills for younger learners! DIRTY CHILDREN IS NOT A BAD THING! More and more, I am hearing about programs for children with outdoor spaces covered in turf with the promise of "clean children". I also know of programs with amazing outdoor spaces, but the over-abundance of rules and expectations of the staff are end up taking autonomy and empowerment from children just to please parents with, once again, tidy children. Is it the job of early childhood professionals to conform to the pressures of our rush, rush, no time for dirty children society?! OR... Is it the job of early childhood professionals to stand up for the rights of a child? ...to encourage parents to slow down, and enjoy the moments...to help them embrace the beauty of childhood they have been gifted with? I believe it is the job of early childhood professionals to spend time and energy to help parents understand WHY those things that children need and do that make adults uncomfortable hold the greatest benefits for children
