EARLY VOTING OPENED TODAY ACROSS ALL 50 WARDS IN CHICAGO AND YET 63% OF CHICAGOANS WILL WALK INTO THE BALLOT BOX SURPRISED TO SEE SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES ON THE BALLOT! As an Academy for Local Leadership Inaugural Fellow, I had the honor of collaborating with Sendhil Revuluri & Jesus Ayala Jr. to make the ALL ACCESS: Chicago Board of Education & Election Candidate Guide! This nonpartisan guide was created because we wanted to not only ask the candidates the right questions that actually center student outcomes and we also wanted to create it so the community could be armed with the information they needed to exercise their most powerful tool for change - their vote. This guide is the start of a conversation. Being civically activated to vote is only one piece of the puzzle. Voters must make a commitment to being  engaged in the collective work of accountability that happens once those elected board members take office! The reality of public education in America: too often, kids in the worst neighborhoods are also stuck in the worst schools.  And the key to solving this problem ... might lie in some lessons from abroad. 70 years ago, Brown v Board of Education ended the legal segregation of schools. Despite overwhelming evidence that diverse, integrated schools are better for all students, far too many children in 2024 attend classrooms apart from their peers of different economic and racial backgrounds. Our new survey with Morning Consult shows Americans are concerned about persistent school segregation, and want our leaders to step up and do more to diversify schools.
