🚨With K-12 state funding flat and mental health/safety dollars being cut by 90% this year, how is your Michigan school district responding? 👍To me, it's just as much a priority issue as it is a funding issue, but our school leaders will need to have the support of their community. ❤️Here in Traverse City, we're forming a Children's Cabinet to: 1️⃣ increase the efficiency/effectiveness of local government efforts to improve child/youth outcomes 2️⃣ leverage evidence-based programs like the National Partnership for Student Success 3️⃣ ensure school efforts to improve student health, wellbeing, and connection are sustainable 4️⃣ coordinate with other local youth-focused systems to improve impact

Ohio State University Graduate with a Focus in Public Policy and Community Planning who Strengthens Communities and Empowers People
One of the most commonly overlooked parts of communities is public spaces. Public spaces cultivate a sense of community, an integral part of an area’s overall feel. Neighborhood schools are a prime example of public spaces that foster this sense of community by bridging people together, promoting innovation, educating the local workforce, and providing safe, enjoyable places for gatherings. Earlier this week, on May 14th I was fortunate to attend a community conversation at Marion Franklin High School, a City of Columbus Public School, discussing the school’s future. The potential closure and re-conversion of the space were two heavily discussed topics, along with how these changes could affect the City of Columbus Schools system and the community at large. More than 30 people attended the meeting, including alumni, current and former teachers, coaches, mental health counselors, and other professionals. Most of them disagreed with the current plans for the school’s future. Forums like this are essential because they ensure that boards hear community voices from those who live in the area, coming from different walks of life before making decisions that could alter generations to come, such as closing a neighborhood high school. If you want your voice heard in community decisions, be sure to attend community conversations. The link below highlights the key talking points and takeaways from the meeting: https://lnkd.in/gKcv6NFc Source: https://lnkd.in/gVkxK4DW #PublicSpace #CommunityConversation #Columbus

Schools and districts that prioritize learning and implementing school-family partnership best practices can see a massive reduction in chronic absenteeism, as well as a host of other positive outcomes. For instance, several districts in California cut their absenteeism rates in half by implementing relationship-centered home visits. Other districts have made significant strides by utilizing TalkingPoints and other two-way communication apps. How is your school or district proactively setting a strong foundation for next school year? In this current environment, one might think the chances for generating any kind of shared agenda for educational equity would be minimal to non-existent. But against the odds, three communities did create such an agenda. Not only that, their agendas were strikingly similar, alerting us to what matters to people when it comes to education in America today. Here's the common agenda items we found from our work in Reading, PA; Lexington, KY; and Clarksville, TN: 1. Mental health and mentoring 2. After- and out-of-school activities 3. Pathways for success 4. Pre-K and early childhood education 5. Teachers who look like the community 6. Equitable allocation of resources 7. Community and student voice The reality of today's ugly politics of education is that it is more about fanatical adults tearing others down than about building up young people. The community-driven agendas created by these three communities serve to bring people together, not divide or destroy them. https://bit.ly/3ROmJ3g

#LOSTTHEIRMINDS #CCISDWRONG #NOTSTRONG Corpus Christi ISD strengthens support for teachers, families with 2024-2025 cellphone rules As CCISD continues planning for the upcoming school year, the district continues to review input from families and staff to help ensure safe and productive environments at all schools. In response to growing concerns from teachers and families that cellphones are a significant distraction to the learning process and to fostering healthy social connections, the district will have rules in place to minimize the use of phones, smartwatches and other devices. “While we have been, and will continue to be, a leader in blending technology into the learning process where appropriate, we agree that phones have become a significant distraction during the school day,“ said Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez. “We are glad to join other districts around the state and nation in placing reasonable limits we are confident will immediately result in a healthier school environment.” For students in grades PK-8, communication devices, as well as ear buds and headphones, must remain turned off and put away during the school day, including testing days. The elementary school day is 7:50 a.m. to 3:10 p.m., with middle schools beginning at 8:50 a.m. and ending at 4:10 p.m. For students in grades 9-12, communication devices, as well as ear buds and headphones, must remain turned off and put away while in the classroom setting, including during testing days. Students will be permitted to use devices between classes and during lunch. Students needing to use a phone may request to visit the front office. All classrooms are equipped with phones that include emergency alert systems, ensuring assistance can be summoned quickly. Students accustomed to doing schoolwork on their personal device are reminded district-issued Chromebooks are available. “We understand this may be an adjustment for some of our students and families,” Hernandez said. “We appreciate everyone’s support as we work, every day, to help our students have the best possible learning environment, which includes minimizing distractions to foster learning and friendships.” The rules are rooted in district policy issued in 2018, which authorizes schools to follow guidelines set forth in the Student Parent Handbook and which authorizes consequences, including confiscation. Schools will work with students as they become accustomed to the consistent expectation that phones will be put away. If needed, consequences will follow progressive discipline principles, which begin with a reminder warning to follow the rules. Detailed information is available at ccisd.us and in the forthcoming Student Parent Handbook. The 2024-2025 school year begins Monday, August 12.

Making decisions about where to send your child to school can be incredibly stressful. For many, it’s not just about choosing a place for education—it’s about aligning with family values and personal dreams. And we go to extreme measures to accomplish this; some families move across cities...ludicrous for a perimeter snob like me =)....to be closer to what they believe is the "right" school. But it makes me wonder: Are we placing too much pressure on this decision? Is relocating or changing entire lifestyles always the best solution? Or is there a way to balance our personal ideals with the idea of improving education for all children, as Dr. Robyn Brookshire highlights in her words? How far is too far when it comes to ensuring the best education for our kids? I’m curious to hear your thoughts—what’s your experience with navigating these tough decisions?
