Incredible performance from the EF Pro Cycling team at Le Tour as Richard Carapaz takes the Yellow Jersey at today's Stage 3! The EF Team Car, the all-electric Cadillac LYRIQ, looks almost as good as Richard in the famous yellow….
Active Travel - what does it mean to you? Walking & Cycling? What about skateboarding and roller blading? In the Mayors Transport Strategy, the catch-all 'walking and cycling' also includes these terms, as well as scooting, use of a wheelchair, tricycles, hand-cycles and other adapted cycles and e-bikes. A Government report on increasing active travel also includes horse riding as active travel and essentially defines it as "any journey that is made by physically active means".
Safety must always be our highest priority.
It is time for professional cycling to take action to have a dedicated safety body whose sole concern is to make the sport safer, reducing the risks to riders and spectators whilst losing none of the thrill of racing.

Overtaking of cyclists in mixed traffic on rural roads - the report that we published last year is now also available in English: https://lnkd.in/dQ7rfM8Y
And we continue our research efforts on the topic. The next step is a study in our cycling simulator, looking into how a comfortable overtaking manoeuvre looks from the cyclists' perspective (including people who avoid cycling on rural roads today).
I'm eager to see how Toronto tackles the growing concern of congestion, not just on highways, which bring thousands of single-occupancy drivers into the city, but also on our local streets. The lack of a go-to solution—such as increased funding for public transit like GoTransit, coupled with congestion charges and higher parking fees—really presents an amazing opportunity for cycling, particularly e-bikes. E-bikes can showcase the versatility of options and the unexpected range of expanding the typical prioritized point A to point B movement, from home to work & back. Could point C, like dropping a child off at school, be factored into that mix? Could point D involve picking up groceries, or point E involve going to an extracurricular activity? E-bikes & the growing popularity of e-cargo bikes give drivers an option to maximize their commutes without relying on their cars. Small investments in cycling/micro-mobility infrastructure (such as separated lanes and secure bike parking) coupled with access to public transit (like Go Trains allowing limited access to e-bikes in separate train cars) create a scenario that could start in Burlington:
A driver hops on their e-bike and rides 20mins to their Go Transit station for the 7:27am train. 2 additional options are available here: they could bring their e-bike with them or park it securely at the station and opt for BikeShareTO when they reach their destination. The train arrives at Union Station at 8:18am. With their e-bike or an available BikeShareTO e-bike, they can then commute an additional 10mins to their office.
Another scenario I see in my neighborhood of Leslieville involves a family of four with a car who purchased an e-cargo bike a few years ago. The bike has a front bucket that can hold a monthly grocery run to Costco, 5kms away. With a 4 & 6y/o, that bucket is now a people cargo mover within the city. The mother works along hospital row on University Avenue, over 5kms away. She proudly showed me her Strava map: she leaves home with the kids, rides downhill to drop one at daycare, rides uphill to drop the other at school, then crosses the Don River at the viaduct to get downtown. During the pandemic, Danforth Ave & University Ave saw upgrades to their cycling infrastructure, creating protected cycle tracks. Her workplace upgraded its parking to include proper and secure space for people riding to work, including those using e-bikes of all shapes and sizes. She has access to a farmer’s market down the street every Tuesday, so during pick-up in the evening, her kids get to pick which vegetables they’ll be eating that night (I wish my kids were that excited to eat veggies).
There are multiple scenarios that could be plotted out, all of them excluding year-round car use. Yes, people on bikes can ride in the rain & in the winter.
Toronto, what are we waiting for? The e-bike revolution is already here. We need to get on this now. Appreciate the share.Peter Norton h/t Scott Butler#BikeTO
Do drivers who get e-bikes drive less? Where cycling networks are ample and accommodating, the answer is yes. Qi Sun, Tao Feng, Astrid Kemperman and Andreas Spahn explain. One policy implication: where cycling networks are poor, public funds now subsidizing battery-electric passenger cars would often be better spent on cycling accommodations.
ZEEDA advisor Matthew Heitmann (Former CMO of Canyon, BMC & TPC) sat with Ray Jenkin to discuss all things bikes and bike biz!
We loved his comments on the future of cycling and why its a great time to be building in the space:
1. ⚡ E-bikes open up the sport of cycling
2. 🖥️ Zwift needs to move beyond performance to broaden their appeal
3. 🚵♀️ Gravel bikes are a shot in the arm for the industry
4. 🌍 Climate change is changing views on cycling
5. 🚘 Auto Industry is coming after micro-mobility & bikes
