Based on my experience as a biller and coder, here's how each role contributes: A medical coder contributes by: 1. Assigning the place of service 2. Identifying the type of service 3. Determining if the patient is new or established 4. Ensuring accurate ICD coding, including gender-specific and age-specific codes 5. Applying includes and excludes notes Establishing medical necessity 6. Implementing NCCI edits (National Correct Coding Initiative). 7. Checking MUEs (Medically Unlikely Edits) 8. Using gender-specific and age-specific CPT codes 9. Applying appropriate modifiers and setting pointers A medical biller contributes by: 1. Verifying provider status 2. Confirming patient eligibility 3. Accurately recording patient demographics 4. Ensuring provider information is correct 5. Handling charge entry 6.
