Bri DeLeon, an #OASEIntern at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, writes: The first half of my internship at the Oregon Coast Aquarium has focused on identifying their most common sources of plastics and investigating sustainable alternatives. One key area for plastics is laundry. Since the Aquarium does a large quantity of laundry daily, I have been experimenting with two microfiber filters. Microfibers are the most predominant type of microplastic found in our oceans and have damaging health impacts on marine ecosystems. In addition to these filters, we have researched alternative glove disposal options and reusable dishware in our cafe! In the coming weeks, I hope to continue experimenting with different alternatives and determine the most effective options to recommend. Additionally, crafting a guidance document that the Aquarium staff and volunteers can utilize to accomplish their plastic reduction goals! Bri is participating in the Oregon Applied Sustainability Experience: Internship Program, which is run by Oregon Sea Grant and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. This blog really made me think about the sustainability of this increasingly digital world we live in. Not something I’d thought about much before. Digital often seems efficient, waste-free, a better solution, but now I’m thinking about all the unused websites in the world, my embarrassingly full inbox, the 1000’s of digital photos I have. Oisin poses some good questions about how businesses (all of us) could measure their digital impact so if you have any knowledge or insights in this area, or know someone who does, I’m sure he’d love to hear from you. #data #carbon #digital #sustainability
I'm excited to share my first blog post from my internship with the University of Edinburgh and the Website and Communications team. As the Green Web Estate Intern, I’ve been exploring digital sustainability, measuring digital carbon emissions, and identifying changes to make the university's web estate more environmentally friendly. It has been great to work alongside the other two Green Interns Catalina Rincon Romero and Christopher O'Neill. Check out 'Exploring Digital Sustainability: Insights from the Start of My Green Web Estate Internship' where I discuss our progress so far and some key questions I still need to answer. I’m currently 8 weeks into this 12-week journey and am loving the experience! 🌲 🌳 #DigitalSustainability #GreenWeb #SustainableTech #Internship #UniversityofEdinburgh

Dear network, I am thrilled to announce that I will soon be starting my internship at the Waterboard Vallei & Veluwe. Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe This waterboard plays a crucial role in the livelihoods of over 1.1 million people and regional ecology. They are committed to managing ground and surface water quality, levels, and supply; treating wastewater; protecting against flooding; managing ecology with an careful eye for biodiversity conservation; maintaining crucial infrastructure; and so much more. Waterboard Vallei & Veluwe sees it as its responsibility to ensure the resilience of the natural system for future generations. They are fully committed to climate mitigation, strengthening the resilience of the natural system, and not passing the burden on. Their actions focus on a future-proof living environment, ideally within the context of “broad prosperity”. During my internship, I will be focusing on a research project centered on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), together with Wim Van Vilsteren, Helene Helsloot, and many other passionate people. My work will involve analysing what it means for the waterboard to embrace these goals, identifying which SDGs are most relevant for us, partners, and stakeholders, exploring current and potential reporting practices, and evaluating its efforts towards a sustainable and climate-neutral future. The research will involve various municipalities, companies, high schools, and other pontential relevant actors. I am excited to contribute to a pro-active organization with such a significant impact and ambitious goals. This internship offers a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable experience, develop my skills, and contribute to a sustainable Netherlands. An interesting and challenging assignment in a period where various transitions, crises, and societal developments call for a shared future strategy. #internship #sustainability #SDGs #watermanagement #WaterschapValleiEnVeluwe #futureproof #BlauweOmgevingsVisie

"Before this internship, my understanding of sustainability was primarily grounded in tangible actions—reducing waste, living frugally, and campaigning for green practices. The digital world seemed distant from these principles and was often seen as the solution, envisioned as part of a sustainable utopia. Terms like ‘virtual’ and ‘cloud’ misled me into believing that our online activities have no environmental impact. Yet, as I’ve learned, the carbon footprint of the digital world is significant and growing. 🌳 Promoting Green Spaces: The Importance of Tree Planting 🌳 I am thrilled to share that I am currently engaged in a social internship with SHAILJA EDUCATION AND WELFARE TRUST, where we are actively working on tree planting initiatives. 🌱 Tree planting is crucial for numerous reasons:- Environmental Benefits: Trees absorb carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, and help mitigate climate change. Biodiversity: They provide habitats for various species, contributing to ecological balance. Health and Wellbeing: Green spaces improve air quality and offer recreational areas, enhancing mental and physical health. Selecting the right species is vital to ensure the sustainability and health of the ecosystem. We are focusing on native species that are well-adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, such as Neem, Banyan, and Peepal. Join us in making a difference! Let's plant more trees and create a greener, healthier planet. 🌍💚 #TreePlanting #Sustainability #Environment #GreenInitiative #SocialInternship #ShailjaTrust. Shailja Education and Welfare Trust

The Dynamics of Competence Competence is developed and nurtured through time and sustained purposeful effort. It can even grow and develop into mastery and virtuosity; but only through sustained focus, disciplined and dedicated effort guided by your cognitive ability and acute discernment of the landscape signals around you. As I said earlier, you and I go through life perceiving the world almost like deaf and blind creatures; neglecting and ignoring a lot more than what we are actually sensing and processing. Why? Because at rest, all our five (5) external senses are mostly set on low resolution. Our sensitivity and alert systems are set only towards those unusual aberrations that deviate from our mental picture of our operating landscape. When anomalies occur, our internal warning bells go wild and our rapid focusing responses go into full alert. But without those sudden environmental anomalies occurring, our senses are largely unfocused and ineffectual! We manage our everyday lives by exception: maintaining a narrow focus and handling only those perceived anomalies framed against our expected idea of what is normal and safe. If we were to become habituated to repetitively intense and chaotic sensory signals, we will become numb and unreceptive and thereby fail to address emerging threats or detect subtle opportunities. Desensitized and weak sensory systems eventually lead to impaired cognition, discernment and cognitive ability. And if I were to express this concept into a loose mathematical equation, Competence is the product of your Cognitive ability multiplied by your trait Conscientiousness raised exponentially to your X factor. Industry and hard work count a lot provided you do not impair your cognitive ability. C = Iq (I)X ; where C is Competence; Iq is Cognitive ability; and I is Conscientiousness (Industry); and x is the exponent (personal efficiency multiple) excerpt from "Competence: Nature and Dynamics"; by RSMD (#ProfessorSam); Follow if you agree.
