No two requests for Kingsgate’s specialist turnaround support are ever the same. But we can apply our expertise to good effect in any situation. We were asked to help a private not-for-profit university in London, which was in severe financial difficulty and facing imminent closure – putting 250 jobs at risk. We advised the Board of Trustees, liaised with regulators and worked with the inexperienced in-house finance team to keep the university going. This included quickly identifying savings of £9m. As a result, a successful partnership was forged with an overseas university, securing our client institution’s future. We then helped to plan the budget and find further savings to put it on a sound financial footing. #financial #recovery #education

The King's Speech resonated strongly with the work we're already doing at CAPSLOCK to break down barriers and create opportunities. The return of Sure Start is fantastic news, particularly for supporting women re-entering the workforce. Transforming the apprenticeship levy for 19-25-year-olds into a broader levy is a positive step too, increasing access to training and reskilling for a wider demographic. However, we would have liked to have seen perhaps a bolder approach for reskilling those over 25! The average age of our reskill alumni is 36, and while individual learning accounts are welcome, will they offer the same level of financial incentive for businesses compared to the levy system... The "one size fits all" approach to skills development raises questions for us too. How will it adapt to different industries? The cyber security sector, for example, has long struggled with skills shortages and is in desperate need of innovative solutions. That's something we're not sure this plan fully addresses. Determining "high value" programmes and maintaining a list of approved non-apprentice courses will be key. But that begs the question, how will these decisions be made, and will this system create a gatekeeper to skills development? Yesterday morning it was announced that there is going to be a DELAY in the FAFSA Data being downloaded to colleges until sometime in March due to a correction that the programmers are making to fix a COLA increase that was supposed to be included in the NEW Simplified FAFSA before it was released. What does this mean to you? Unfortunately, colleges that high school seniors applied to that only require the FAFSA will now be delaying when they will be sending out their Financial Aid Offers to students. This will, in turn, delay a family's ability to Appeal a Financial Aid Offer, which will delay their ability to make a final college decision, especially if they were counting on receiving some need-based financial aid. For colleges that require the CSS Profile in addition to the FAFSA, this will delay students receiving their FINAL Financial Aid Offer from the college. Many of these colleges have already sent out preliminary Financial Aid Offers. Needless to say, this is a messy transition to the NEW FAFSA that is taking place - but hang in there because I am confident everything will work out eventually. The Board of Tennessee State University has been disbanded due to an audit report that appears to have overlooked the fact that the university has been subject to budget underfunding for several decades. Furthermore, the institution is owed approximately $2.1 billion in land-grant funding and is among numerous Historically Black Colleges and Universities (#HBCUs) grappling with financial challenges. A communication from the U.S. Secretary of Education and the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture highlights a significant disparity of over $12 billion in funding between land-grant HBCUs and their non-HBCU counterparts. This funding gap leaves HBCUs, like Tennessee State University, struggling to function with limited resources. Hi all, I want you to know that I’ve filed the paperwork, the signatures and all the requirements to become the prov’l Liberal candidate in Kings Centre. It’s time for Mr. Higgs to retire. Why here? I was born here, summered here - and on these beautiful waters, all my life. I lived here again when my kids were born, and I’ve had a place here for 26 years. My family has been in Westfield for over a century. This is the one place I would consider throwing my hat in the ring. Why now? It’s time. The list is daunting. Healthcare, education, housing - worker shortages almost across the board. A growing cohort of unhoused people. Seniors waiting for home care or waiting in hospital for a place to call home. Municipal reform that never got to financing, always the pointy end of the stick. Some of you may remember One in a Million parmi nous, our initiative to grow the NB population to a million in a decade. Now that we’ve seen some population growth, largely accidental, we’re wishing we’d planned for it, built for it. It isn’t too late, but it is time. Here, it’s also about schools, roads, the Crane Mountain landfill, and more. Broadband is thin in parts of our riding. Growth, limits and constraints on growth. Infrastructure. Building for growth where we want it. It’s time. We need some calm, cabinet ministers who are trusted, heard. A renewed respect for difference, negotiation, restraint, compromise. We need to respect all New Brunswickers, dialing down a rhetoric that pits citizens against one another. The marginalized deserve our respect and our help. Give everyone comfort - and trust, and they’ll contribute. The pie grows. It’s time. It’s past time. Susan Holt will end the drama and take on the challenges we face. I have confidence in Susan and confidence in the team she’s putting together. Why me? My story has twists and turns. Useful ones. I started my career with the federal dept of Finance working with big, sick companies. As an economist, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. Then the Manitoba govt in similar work before heading off to law school. That was my education plan. A short stretch practicing law here in Saint John and then back to industry - trade shows and, then, most of the 1990s as the VP and Director of Ops for a business jet operation in Toronto. As the projects that turned my crank wound down, I left to teach - economics and management, in the public schools. I had stories. Students love that. Back to NB in 2013 and supply teaching nearly every day since, in high schools from Harbour View to Belleisle. I formed One in a Million parmi nous in 2015 to push population growth as a reliable source of economic growth. I was president of the Saint John HDC for nine years and helped out in elections from time to time. My varied background gives me a perspective and the ability to put things together. My heart is in Kings Centre. I know much of the lands and some of the people. I’m looking forward to knowing many more.

Happy Birthday Grover Cleveland! I know what you’re thinking – Who’s that? You not alone and it’s part of the reason why Troy Senik his book. Cleveland is the only President to serve non-consecutive terms. His first term was 1885 to 1889; his second from 1893 to 1897. As I learned from his book, Cleveland’s early life was tough. He didn’t go to college, becoming a lawyer through what we would today call an apprenticeship. His early professional life was nondescript, but he became known as hard worker. He was also regarded as honest and independent. He lived frugally, sending money to support his widowed mother. Because of this obligation, I understood why he didn’t serve in uniform during the Civil War, paying a substitute to take his place, as was allowed. In 1871 he won election as Sheriff of Erie County. Returns on his performance were mixed and he served one two-year term. 10 yrs later he was approached to run for Mayor of Buffalo and won in a close election. Corruption in city government was rampant. Further, city sewage and sanitation were big problems. In one of his 1st acts, he vetoed a contract to address the problems that was to be awarded to the highest bidder, 4 times more expensive than the lowest bidder. He gained a reputation as one to take on problems directly and solve them. After less than one year as Mayor, he was elected Governor of New York. Again, he championed reforms and pushed back on needless spending. One of his biggest supporters was Theodore Roosevelt, a member of the opposite political party. After 2 years as Governor, he was nominated to run for President and won his first term in November 1884. If you are keeping score, you see an amazing journey. The book describes the very interesting details of his life and service. For example, Cleveland is the only President to be married while in office. Many times it was not what he did, but what he rejected and didn’t do. 2 takeaways that I found myself thinking about: 1. Reputation as a hard worker – his reputation was earned from long hours and attention to detail. Not everyone agreed with his decisions, but no one questioned whether he had done his homework. 2. Commitment to doing what he thought was right – throughout his life and especially in his first term, he opposed ideas and legislation that he believed was wrong or unnecessary. I suppose, intentionally, his last words were “I tried so hard to do right.” Leaving office he moved to Princeton, NJ, led a low-key life, and focused on being a father. One anecdote from the book captured Grover as a person: Hearing his young daughter mention that a classmate didn’t receive Valentines, Grover was moved to tears. This is the same man who ordered federal troops to be deployed and whose first reaction was to pound the table. He later sent a messenger to the girl’s house with a Valentine bearing his name. It will make a good gift if you are thinking ahead for Father’s Day. #Veterans

TRUMP ATTACKS HIGHER EDUCATION AND PROPOSES A FREE ONLINE COLLEGE. REALLY? Yes, it's true that many Americans currently question the value of a college degree. And, frankly, if my kids were still college age, I'd say, "Study whatever you want and become a truly educated person. But also learn a skill or trade that Gen AI can't take away from you." It IS possible to do both. Meanwhile, let's not destroy or deprecate what is still the greatest higher-education infrastructure the world has ever seen. Just as Trump is somewhere between indifferent and hostile toward our Democracy, he also despises our great universities and wonderful liberal-arts colleges and unparalleled state public-university systems. Why? Because we stand against everything he stands for: truth, justice and the American way. We are the Supermen and Superwomen who guard the citadel of Democracy. Beyond the quality and quantity of higher ed's academic programs and research achievements, higher ed is also a vital bulwark in this age of untruths. No wonder Trump hates us. Lastly, let's not forget the infamous Trump University, subject of a national scandal. That sham institution paid $25 million to settle a suit by its defrauded students back in 2017. https://lnkd.in/eMXhp4JF Think Trump's national online university will be any better? Here’s The Notary Education Group’s story: Quick backstory: The Notary Education Group grew up in the heart of Florida. Navigating complex notarial requirements was a challenge. Fun fact: We started with just a few books! The odds: To say we were setup for success from the beginning would be an overstatement. The odds of success for a new educational resource are slim. And only a small percentage make it to becoming a trusted source. The goal: But we had our sights set on empowering notaries. And for years, we were relentless about providing expertise, support, and accessibility. The obstacle: Unfortunately, success turned out to be a lot harder than we originally imagined. Building a comprehensive library was tough. Engaging a community was challenging. Staying current with regulations was demanding. And by 2022, we almost chose to give up. The breakthrough: Until one day, we realized the power of community. As the story goes, we started engaging more with notaries and their needs. And the rest is history. The achievement: Between 2022 and 2024, we went on to: Expand our library resources. Build a supportive community. Offer ongoing learning opportunities. Maybe most importantly, we empowered notaries to succeed. The lesson: I love The Notary Education Group’s story because it represents the power of persistence. It reminds us of the power of expertise, support, and accessibility, compounded over time. Because when we focus on the right things, where we’re headed is certain.
