The article 4 Types of GenAI Risk and How to Mitigate Them from Harvard Business Review identifies and discusses four primary risks associated with generative AI and offers strategies to mitigate these risks. I am a big fan of HBR and pay for a subscription but I have summarised the article here: The 4 types of risk and the associated mitigations are: 1. Bias and Fairness: - Risk: Generative AI systems can perpetuate and even amplify existing biases present in the training data, leading to unfair outcomes. - Mitigation: Implementing diverse and representative training datasets, regularly auditing AI outputs for bias, and incorporating fairness constraints in the AI models. 2. Security and Privacy: - Risk: GenAI can be exploited to generate malicious content, such as deepfakes or phishing emails, and can also inadvertently expose sensitive information. - Mitigation: Strengthening security protocols, using AI to detect and counteract malicious uses, and ensuring robust data privacy measures. 3. Intellectual Property (IP) and Ownership: - Risk: The use of GenAI raises questions about the ownership of AI-generated content and potential infringement on existing IP rights. - Mitigation: Establishing clear guidelines and legal frameworks for AI-generated content, and ensuring transparency in the AI's training data sources. 4. Accountability and Transparency: - Risk: It can be challenging to determine accountability for decisions made by GenAI, especially when the decision-making process is opaque. - Mitigation: Enhancing the transparency of AI systems, documenting decision-making processes, and assigning clear accountability for AI-driven decisions. The article emphasises the importance of proactive measures and continuous monitoring to address these risks effectively, ensuring that the benefits of generative AI are realised while minimising potential harms. The implications of the recent Executive Order on AI safety and security for company boards include: - Developing AI policies and processes: Boards should be involved in the development of AI policies and processes, ensuring that they align with the company's strategy and risk management framework - Cybersecurity and compliance: Boards must understand the cybersecurity implications of AI and ensure that employees are trained to mitigate AI risks. They should also consider AI-related compliance and controls, as regulations in this area are not yet standardized - AI governance: Boards should establish an AI governance system, including defining AI risk management roles and responsibilities - Understanding AI's impact on the business and industry: Boards should have an adequate understanding of how AI could disrupt their business and industry, as well as the strategic opportunities and risks it presents - AI use in company processes and third-party products: Boards should be aware of how AI is used in company processes and third-party products used by the company, and ensure that the company is positioned to leverage its data assets effectively - AI's potential risks and legal considerations: Boards should be prepared to address the potential risks and legal considerations associated with AI integration, such as fraud, discrimination, bias, and disinformation By addressing these implications, company boards can ensure that AI is integrated safely and effectively, maximizing its potential benefits while minimizing the associated risks. Rarely does NIST issue point blank warnings/concerns like these directly to the public. It's usually via weeks/months of them filtering out through their Special Publication (SP) drafting/comment cycles. This demonstrates that even NIST has jumped on board with the concern many industry experts have (including myself) is that the mindset across any/all industry verticals is to have at least 1 AI use case to keep up with the jones to say they're using AI in some capacity. These Rapid AI deployments are no different than any other go to market strategy for competitive technologies which is to go to market with little/no risk assessment/testing and let the end users identify all of the flaws to patch reactively vs proactively so they aren't last into a new market. In AI's case, a market that is changing the world faster than we can reel it in. #artificialintelligencetechnology #aiadvancements #CybersecurityRisk #DataPrivacy #NIST #itgovernance #regulatorycompliance

With the #budget released for the year in AUS, and a focus on safer use for AI, here is a quick look from Craig Nielsen on what this also means for organisations... " All organisations aiming to benefit from AI must share the responsibility of its ethical adoption, not solely regulators. In order to integrate AI properly, leaders need to assess how AI fits into their broader goals and security and privacy policies. Without the proper guardrails in place, such as how AI tools store and protect data, organisations are vulnerable to security risks, fines, customer attrition, and reputational damage.
