It is actually true that commercial and industrial loans could be securitized--but it is not true that the reason why they are not securitized is that the originators won't let them go. This logic doesn't stand up against the historical experience of mortgage origination, when smaller mortgage originators were quite happy to sell mortgages to the bulge bracket firms. That happened. And the GFC happened. The missing piece is the analysis of one-way risk expiration. Credit obligations have one-way risk: there is downside, but the only source of upside is exogenous (when rates markets move). Volatility analysis is the driver of value, but it's the inverse of the volatility analysis that drives derivative pricing. The volatility is in the loan(s) not the prices. The failure of #NRSROs to reflect the shifts in volatility of the structured securities they rated is a direct cause of the bubble buildup and burst. First, for about 20 years, securitizations were rated too low. That created a pressure to force the NRSROs to relax their standards, which they did gladly for the money. Because now (circa 1997-2005) NRSRO capital was in vogue. But if you can't measure that something is too rich, you can't measure that it's too cheap. IE, you can't measure it at all. Yet the rest of the market still follows these misguided benchmarks.
