The Pomona College administration deployed some 30 police officers, including a dozen in full riot gear, in response to the sit-in. Nineteen students were arrested, jailed, and served an immediate suspension from the college. CAIR-LA calls on Pomona College to: - Immediately drop all charges against the students. - Revoke all suspensions. - Issue a public apology for the administration’s unnecessary escalation of violence and use of police intervention.

The adultification of black girls. I came across a 2019 report by Dr. Jamilia Blake - "Listening to Black Women and Girls: Lived Experiences of Adultification Bias". Black girls are treated like they are older than they are as early as preschool. Dr. Blake's research suggests that bias toward black girls can lead to less protection and support, and more punishment, among educators and law enforcement. Some of the suggested solutions to help overcome adultification bias against black girls are awareness of adultification, self-reflection and being careful about language choices as the first steps. This might involve calling out how adults speak to and about children in your community. To read the report - https://lnkd.in/d6gvGVgq Also check out the documentary - "Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools" (trailer is below). It's a powerful film about the realities of life for a lot of black girls in our country. In schools, black girls don’t misbehave more or commit more serious infractions, experts say, yet they often receive more severe penalties for the same behavior as white peers. Black girls are nearly 6x more likely to get out-of-school suspension than their white counterparts and more likely to be suspended multiple times than any other gender or race of students. Black girls are also nearly 3x more likely to be referred to juvenile court for a delinquency offense. Research by Georgetown Law's Center on Poverty and Inequality, found black girls face both racial and gender bias that feeds the misconception that they are more insubordinate and aggressive and less in need of nurturing and protection. As a result, black girls are at greater risk of dropping out or being held back, which in turn leads to a three-fold increase in the chances of becoming entangled in the juvenile justice system, and later, in the adult system. These kinds of realities that our children of color experience are the evidence as to why we should be actively working to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in juvenile justice involvement thereby improving outcomes for ALL students. #blackgirls #vulnerablepopulations #education #thisisthework #pushout #createchange #awarenessraising #blackhistory365 #askquestions #useyourvoice https://lnkd.in/dyFAMeJt

Colleges & universities can only address hate crimes & other incidents on campus that they know about. That's why it's so important to report these crimes to help prevent future offenses. Learn more about the Clery Act here: https://lnkd.in/eyCGKvhB

A new report from a congressional watchdog reveals that Black girls face more disciplinary actions and harsher punishments in public schools compared to their peers from other racial backgrounds. Over the course of the study, it was found that during the 2017-18 school year, Black girls accounted for nearly half of all exclusionary disciplinary measures despite representing only 15% of girls in public schools. Factors such as school poverty levels and biases like adultification contribute to these disparities, according to the report. Lawmakers are urging schools and policymakers to reevaluate these exclusionary discipline policies to support Black girls better and address the harmful impacts of such practices on their self-esteem and learning. https://lnkd.in/ezTHQi2z

A few weeks ago, media announced that Liberty University was fined $16 M for Clery Act infractions-a fine much larger than the one incurred by Michigan State University, where Dr. Larry Nassar sexually assaulted hundreds of young girls. Why are some institutions investigated and fined yet so many others #coverup and the public does not know about sexual harassment, assault, bullying, retaliation, and discrimination? Sexual abuse, retaliation, and discrimination are #crimes against Title IX law. I #spokeup to #protectstudents . I was #punished. When parents drop off their kids to college, they assume that all will be safe and comfortable. Yet, statistically, many students (both men AND women) report being sexually harassed by their professors, deans, and other administrators. #unethical #disgusting #exploitation We need #TitleIXreform. We need #saferworkenvironments. #stopsexualharassment #stopretaliation #stopdiscrimination #stoppasstheharasser #stopNDA #stopprotectiveorders Please help: U.S. Department of Justice U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) U.S. Department of Education HHS Office of Inspector General Office for Civil Rights, Department of Education
