The Cal-Bridge Fall Conference is only one week away! The PhD Open House provides scholars the opportunity to network with faculty from various UC campuses and departments. Scholars are encouraged to ask questions specific to the departments research, labs and admission requirements to better prepare for their graduate school applications. This year, 28 different departments from many University of California campuses will connect with scholars as a part of the Fall Conference.

"As someone who started over two decades ago with a small departmental Research Experiences for Undergraduates program and then moved to open a campus-wide office at a Hispanic Serving Institution, working on COEUR 2.0 has been an extremely validating experience. It allowed me to team up with and hear from multiple contributors who have experienced firsthand the positive impact that undergraduate research, scholarly and creative inquiry continues to have at the national level on students from diverse backgrounds, with different academic and career interests, and from the full spectrum of higher education institutions. This richness of experiences and recommendations shared by program directors, mentors, evaluators, higher administrators and students will serve to inspire not only those who are starting to develop programs at their institutions, but also the more seasoned individuals who could in turn serve as allied voices to agencies, foundations, donors, and others at the state and federal levels." What a great conversation with three dynamic leaders on the Detroit Economic Club stage. Big takeaways: (1) We need to educate today’s students not only for their first job, but for the many jobs they'll have by the time they retire in the 2075 timeframe; (2) The URC is an economic powerhouse, contributing ~$24B per year to the state's economy; (3) It's all about the AND: the URC's goal is to make an impact greater than the sum of the parts. Thanks again to Kevin Guskiewicz, Kimberly Andrews Espy, Ph.D., and Santa J. Ono for their time and leadership!

The University of Southampton has launched the Black Futures Scholarship scheme for talented UK-domiciled Black and mixed-Black heritage students who want to pursue a PhD at Southampton. For this program, students are encouraged to contact supervisors within their area of interest to design a project. I would welcome inquiries from students interested in any area associated with fish behaviour and physiology. The research in my lab focuses on the underlying physiological mechanisms that cause animals to behave the way they do, particularly in group-living species. I am fascinated by the links between animal behavior and physiology and aim to understand how these dynamics may change in response to biotic (e.g., parasite infection) or abiotic (e.g., environmental disturbance) factors. The project would be co-supervised by Dr. Safi Darden (University of Exeter). The deadline for Black Futures Scholarship applications to be received is Friday 23 February 2024, with successful applicants being notified by the end of March 2024. Today we are highlighting the final sections of the conference formats available, while all underneath the general topic of undergraduate experiences, they focus on specific scholarship areas. The first section for today is Undergraduate Students: Access. Proposals may address barriers and/or promising practices in relation to undergraduate student access; how access is or is not actualized in relation to ongoing manifestations of systemic oppression and power; the role of multiple/overlapping policies (e.g., sociopolitical, regional, state, campus-specific) on undergraduate student access. Led by Section Co-Chairs Awilda Rodriguez, Ph.D. and Lydia Ross, here’s a quick tip you should know about submissions for this section. “Broadening our understanding of how individuals access higher education is important as we develop promising practices and continue to identify systemic and other barriers.” - Lydia Ross, Section Co-Chair

Alabama A&M University’s Bulldog Transit System (BTS) has been awarded an impressive $8.1 million grant through the Competitive Low-No Emissions Program for FY 2023. This grant marks a significant step towards AAMU’s ambitious goal of achieving a fully zero-emissions transit system by 2031. Since 2017, the university has been on a mission to transition to a sustainable and renewable energy future. This new funding will accelerate BTS's efforts by expanding its solar power microgrid system to 2.5 megawatts and enhancing infrastructure, including new electric buses, charging stations, and even a zero-emissions autonomous shuttle. “This initiative is not just about AAMU; it’s about setting a standard for environmental justice and sustainability that can inspire and guide other transit agencies across the country,” says Marshall Chimwedzi, Director of AAMU BTS. The project includes significant upgrades to the bus storage station, workforce development programs for solar and electric bus maintenance, and a timeline to achieve 100% zero emissions by 2031. This achievement highlights the power of partnerships and innovative thinking within the HBCU community and showcases the impactful role that HBCUs like Alabama A&M play in driving forward sustainability and environmental justice. Stay tuned as Alabama A&M leads the way in creating a greener, more sustainable future for us all! 🌍 #Sustainability #ZeroEmissions #HBCUs #EnvironmentalJustice #Innovation #BusinessCommunity #AAMU #HBCUBusinessDeans

A Milestone Accomplished Today March 8, 2024 Let me pen down these few lines reflecting on my journey to intellectual self-realization to remind myself of this day in years to come. My academic journey in the Western world commenced in the Fall semester of 2017 with enrollment in the esteemed Loyola Marymount University, where I pursued a master's degree in Systems Engineering. This pivotal step occurred shortly after my initial arrival in the United States, a nation emblematic of hope and freedom. In the final semester of my master's program, I undertook the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), securing provisional admission to Claremont Graduate University (CGU) to pursue Ph.D. studies in Information Systems and Technology. CGU, renowned for its scholarly eminence, provided an enabling environment to accomplish this scholarly pursuit. Upon graduation from the master's program in the summer of 2019, I transitioned seamlessly into the doctoral program at CGU in the fall semester of 2019, I embarked on a journey fraught with apprehensions and uncertainties, particularly concerning the financial exigencies inherent in international student status. Nonetheless, buoyed by unwavering determination and divine providence, I commenced the doctoral endeavor. Over the ensuing years, divine intervention consistently facilitated my progress, culminating in the successful completion of my doctoral defense on March 8, 2024. Reflecting on this odyssey, I proffer counsel to aspiring scholars, emphasizing the imperative of unwavering commitment to one's academic aspirations, assured of divine intervention in the realization of endeavors. Gratitude permeates my sentiments as I acknowledge the indispensable roles of individuals instrumental in facilitating this scholarly expedition. Your collective support and contributions served as indispensable pillars upon which this academic success was erected. With the culmination of one academic odyssey, the denouement heralds the inception of another, characterized by the scholarly imperative encapsulated in the adage, "publish or perish." The academic trajectory, akin to the pursuit of a doctorate, is replete with arduous challenges; yet, guided by resolute determination, avenues of scholarly advancement invariably emerge. In conclusion, my profound gratitude is extended to you my friends, family, benefactors, and benefactresses for your unwavering encouragement and benevolent supplications. Your steadfast solidarity fortified my academic voyage, emblematic of the collaborative ethos inherent in scholarly endeavors.
