Today is #SocialMobilityDay and here's why it's important to me ⬇️ I come from a proud family of grafters - my dad ran a small camera shop for 30 years. He worked 6 days a week until his late 60s, and this was supplemented by my mum working in supermarkets, cleaning, and caring throughout my childhood. I went to public school and genuinely did not even think about what I was going to do for a career - I just knew I would be working hard. 'Careers" weren't really talked about - apart from taking some random job generator in IT - it was just get these kids through their exams and (hopefully) into college. I did get into college and then scraped through to University in London. For me this was overwhelming - I was learning alongside people who had travelled from all over the world and seemed so much more worldly and confident than me. At this point I had only been on a plane twice. Then, despite a first-class degree in journalism, I couldn't afford to work an unpaid internship to get my foot in the door. I worked all the way through university and I was still barely getting by with my overdraft. I didn't know anyone who worked in media or journalism - or even worked in London. Nobody in my family did. So I had to leave London, move back in with mum and dad, and take a job in a call centre. I am in a great career now - the result of a couple of smart, and lucky, job opportunities. I'm in London and in a successful corporate environment, but I still get the fear I am not educated or eloquent enough. ✨ This is why social mobility day is important ✨ ❌ What you know should matter more than who you know. ❌ Unpaid internships are the devil and exclude some of the most hardworking people! ❌ Confidence is critical to social mobility - how do we help young people build it? WELL THAT'S A WRAP FOLKS! Our team closed the year stronger than ever before and took so much HELL outta Hello, they'll probably be twiddling their thumbs from now on. JK! There's always work to be done and businesses to help! Anyway, we're no Steven Spielberg, but we did want to give you a little peek into what we were up to (socially at least) in 2024 We added a Penny to Team Towner (she's a #Remote worker, only comes in for important meetings) We partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters Kansas City. Come fill our drop box please We got sooo fancy for some great galas! Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Kansas City Girls Preparatory Academy, Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation, and mucho more. We did Monday Moring #Teambuiling activities that weren't stogy and boring. We sent our team to Colorado with Vistage Worldwide, Inc. and they hiked their buns off (HEY! not so big of shocker Julie Stotlar-Towner can indeed hike people!) Obviously we went to A LOT of sports events with our partners, KC Current #kcbaby, and Kansas City Chiefs Julie got cozy with Goldman Sachs and the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business program, so she's a genius now. Asahi Pompey Thanks for doing everything you do. Lucas Salinas and Keith Towner had their brains examined...It's a long story. We ate, we potlucked and BBQ'ed and we solved some mysteries of course! So even though this is just a small little recap and not everything we did to help our community, our team, and our clients in 2024 is captured here, we think you get the jest.  ‘I look in the mirror, I don’t wish my skin to be darker to match my classmates Nor do I wish my skin to be lighter to be ‘more attractive’ A poignant piece from one of the standout submissions of our previous SFSP Awards was a beautiful poem that captured the heart of what our work stands for. Can you imagine a world without racism? We can, and we’re building it everyday. Interestingly, although there are many who share our vision, most do not know where to begin the process. Here are five tips on how you can encourage a racism-free environment in your workplace or other gathering. Speak Up When It Counts If someone makes an inappropriate comment or joke, politely but firmly call it out. A simple “That’s not okay” can go a long way in setting the tone for respect. Get to Know Each Other Take time to learn about your colleagues' backgrounds and experiences. Organize a potluck where everyone brings a dish from their culture—it’s a fun way to bond and appreciate diversity! Put Inclusive Policies Into Practice Policies are important, but actions matter more. Regularly check that hiring practices, promotions, and workplace opportunities are fair and equitable for everyone. Make Learning a Team Effort Host movie nights, book clubs, or talks that explore issues of race and inclusion. Choose topics that spark conversations and help people understand different perspectives. Celebrate Differences Mark cultural holidays and milestones in the workplace. Whether it’s putting up a simple sign or having a small celebration, showing recognition makes everyone feel valued. If I woke up every morning thinking we have so far to go and we have to go it alone, we'd be stuck. Expansive thinking has led us to engaging with the larger community. There just aren't enough hours or dollars for the CultureALL team to achieve our goals alone.
