Equality versus Equity in Public Engagement: What’s the Difference? 🤔⚖️
This illustration of different people biking comfortably, with discomfort, or not at all is a great visual for understanding the difference between what is equal and what is equitable.
At Uplift Co., we believe in creating opportunities for everyone to have their voice heard in shaping their community—but here’s the key difference between equality and equity in public engagement:
🌟 Equality means providing everyone with the same platform to participate. It assumes that all community members can engage in the same way, regardless of their background or circumstances.
🌟 Equity, however, recognizes that people have different needs and barriers. It’s about ensuring that all voices—including those from underrepresented groups—have the support and resources they need to participate meaningfully.
In our public engagement work, we don’t just give everyone a microphone—we make sure everyone’s voice can be heard. On our projects, creating equity has included having a translator available, ensuring space is accessible, facilitating small focus groups, having one-one conversations, and offering both virtual and in-person engagement opportunities.
🔑 Key takeaway: Community engagement isn’t just about inviting people to the table; it’s about making sure everyone has the tools and comfort level to actively contribute to decisions that affect them. 💪
