Scottish Water has completed one of the first sewer network upgrade projects under its flagship £500 million Improving Urban Waters programme.

Now that the Lucasville Pond retrofit project is complete, it’s time for the New Britain Pond retrofit. The contractor has begun work on the pond that is behind the Public Works Buildings and backs to Point of Woods Drive. This stormwater project will upgrade stormwater capacity and improve water quality treatment. The project is expected to take about 14 months. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eQQrUQqx

Major investment to alleviate sewer flooding at East Shore in Pittenweem.  CWA has completed the first stage of a multi-million-pound investment project to help reduce the risk of sewer flooding in Pittenweem. The project involves the upgrading of new and improved wastewater infrastructure, including a new long sea outfall, Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) chambers and upgraded pipework.    Work started in the East Shore area in January 2024. The existing CSO has now been upgraded with a new powered screen, the purpose of which is to reduce the risk of wrongly flushed items such as wet wipes from ending up in the environment during times of heavy rain.    A new outfall has also been installed within East Harbour which will take existing overflow from the inner harbour further out to sea. These works were completed ahead of the 2024 Pittenweem Arts Festival. In early December, our teams completed the work by carrying out sewer lining works in East Shore and Mid Shore.    Colin Freeland, CWA Project Manager said: “We are pleased to complete the East Shore stage of this important investment for Pittenweem. We have listened to the community and programmed our works in around their requirements. We have used specialist contractors and divers to complete this phase of works. London super sewer turned on after eight years of construction London’s £4.5bn super sewer has now been turned on after eight years of construction work. The first four of 21 sites have been switched on with the new tunnel starting to protect the River Thames from sewage pollution for the first time. Valves, which operate like giant gates, are now open at four sites with the rest due to come online in the coming months when the sewer will reach full operating capacity next year. In May the new 25km super sewer was connected to the 6.9km Lee Tunnel – completing the full ‘London Tideway Tunnel’ network which has a combined capacity of 1.6m m3. Tideway CEO Andy Mitchell CBE said: “This is an important moment for the Thames. The super sewer has been switched on and is starting to protect the river from sewage pollution. “After eight years of construction, in which almost 25,000 people have contributed more than 40 million working hours, this system is operating for the first time. “These are early days, with more connections to make and further testing to come, but the super sewer’s positive influence on the health of the Thames will increase over the coming months – and London will soon be home to the cleaner, healthier river it deserves.” Teams are now working to bring the system into full operation. This involves connecting the remaining discharge points to the new super sewer and testing the entire system during different weather conditions, including heavy storms. While the testing phase is now underway, work continues above ground to finish the new riverside public spaces being created as part of the project. The Tideway project is being delivered by an alliance of contractors. The west region is being delivered by a joint venture of #BAMNuttall, #MorganSindallInfrastructure and #BalfourBeatty. The central region is being delivered by a joint venture of #Ferrovial Agroman UK and #LaingORourke. The east region is being delivered by a joint venture of #Costain, #VinciConstructionGrandsProjets and #BachySoletanche. System integration is being delivered by Amey, which is responsible for providing process control, communication equipment and software systems for operation, maintenance and reporting across the #ThamesTidewayTunnel system. https://lnkd.in/ewftjd5J

People who know me, will know how much I often bang on about the need for #SUDs in street design and to go beyond active travel. I often promote schemes such as Greener Grangetown and Sheffield’s Grey to Green, as ‘game changers’ in the UK. And they are. But…this scheme in Mansfield has gone further. It’s addressing retrospective fittings of SUDs on a town scale. Not street or neighbourhood. A town! This is a whole new level and one I’m hoping will challenge an outdated mindset around the retrospective fitting of SUDs. Put simply, we have no choice but to adapt our streets if we are to help our communities to become more resilient in the future. Schemes like this deliver incredible multiple benefits at a local level and helps challenge what our streets should look like and how they operate. It’s time we treated water as an asset like they do in other countries and not see it as a liability. Looking forward to getting up and visiting this at some point and well done to all those involved.
