I recently spoke on behalf of our client, UNSW, at a council meeting to encourage Council to support the delivery of additional student housing in Randwick. The story from The Sydney Morning Herald provides a good summary…
"This Sydney university wants to build 1000 apartments. Locals are up in arms" - https://lnkd.in/gMcjVucW
The responsibility to unlock and deliver housing at all levels of Council is important to say the least.
Sydney is in a once-in-a-generation housing crisis, and it is clear that there is no silver bullet to solve the problem at hand. The NSW Government’s commitment to the National Housing Accord requires the delivery of 377,000 new homes over the next 5 years. To achieve this, there have been many initiatives both signalled and implemented, including the flagship Transport Oriented Development program, low-and mid-rise reforms, and new housing targets.
The task of delivering housing in the Housing Accord is momentous, and collaboration and commitment at all levels of government is needed. Industry will also play a critical role in achieving this aspiration, particularly in the delivery of diverse housing options which will create greater supply and relieve pressure from existing rental stock.
Here’s hoping for swift reforms, action, and accountability.
