Recruitment for IRB # 23787 Art Educator Attitudes about Talent Development and High Ability We've developed a pilot survey to inquire about art educators' attitudes about specialized art programs like NAHS/NJAHS, gifted and talented, magnet schools, AP, IB, and college-level art courses, etc. What values do you hold for the selectivity or openness of such programs and for their potential benefit to individuals or to society? This anonymous survey will present you with 30 statements articulating a wide spectrum of attitudes. You may select any statement with which you agree. The survey will show you where your point of view may be located along two theoretical constructs.    You may find it enjoyable, and it will only take a few minutes of your time. Eligible participants are current art educators in any school, museum, or organizational setting, preservice art educators, and art education administrators/professors/researchers. What do parents who are unfamiliar with progressive education miss when they glance at a school as if they were scrolling through Instagram?   I’m accustomed to parents who are unfamiliar with and dismiss progressive education - they tend to take a quick glance and don’t make the time to take a deeper, more considered look to appreciate the scholarship behind child-centered decisions, the skill required to have meaningful conversations with children, or the power of a student-led discussion. It's a bit like people who visit an art museum, look at paintings for 5 seconds, and then taking a picture on their phone. They miss the subtleties of color in a painting, the genius of materials in a sculpture or the profound meaning of work that challenges us to think and decipher. Vanessa Jackson, RA. Yet art teaches children to question. It wakes up imaginations. It builds confidence. It encourages children to see the world differently and to make their mark. But making and studying art in our classrooms is getting harder and harder. A curriculum that focuses on core subjects at the expense of everything else means art is being sidelined in our schools. It’s a short-sighted society that sees art as a ‘low value’ subject. Bring it back to our classrooms. 🎨 The case for art in our classrooms is clear.
