Ohio co-ops’ main source of reliable power is caught between a rock and a hard place. New EPA rules will potentially force the closure of the Cardinal Power Plant because the only other option is a gamble on technology that isn’t proven and costs billions of dollars. Read about the rule and the decision power generation co-ops across the nation are facing ➡️ https://bit.ly/4cp9BZD.

Check out this Op/Ed from cleveland.com to read Todd Snitchler, former PUCO chair and former Ohio State Representative, argue that Ohio's deregulation of power generation has been an undeniable success story, promoting transparency, reliability, and lower costs for consumers. Deregulation has yielded significant emissions reductions and replaced inefficient, high-emission plants with cleaner, more efficient ones. Competitive markets have driven down wholesale power prices and improved reliability. NOPEC agrees that reverting to utility-owned generation would ignore these benefits and impose unnecessary costs on Ohio ratepayers. Let's keep moving forward, not backwards, to ensure a sustainable, resilient and cost-effective energy future for Ohio.

Important new technology for keeping electricity ready to go when you turn on your light switch.
Basin Electric is investing in technology that will enhance grid capability in northwestern North Dakota. To allow for more electricity to flow across currently operating transmission lines this summer in the area, the cooperative is installing 19 Ampacimon Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) devices on WAPA’s 75-mile-long Williston-to-Charlie Creek 230-kilovolt (kV) line. 💡 Ohio Energy News 💡 The EPA's latest regulations on power plant emissions, including Ohio's Cardinal Power Plant, are shaking up the electricity landscape, posing significant challenges to reliability and affordability for over a million Ohioans. Precision Quincy Industries is at the forefront of addressing these challenges, ensuring a stable and sustainable power grid for Ohio's future (Read to the end to learn more). Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) unveiled its final rule targeting emissions from power plants nationwide, including Ohio's Cardinal Power Plant in Brilliant. This rule, demanding existing coal-fired plants to be 90% carbon emission-free by 2032, poses significant challenges to the backbone of reliable and affordable electricity generation for over 1,000,000 electric cooperative members across Ohio. Pat O'Loughlin, president and CEO of Buckeye Power and Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives, condemns these regulations as unrealistic and unachievable. The EPA's mandates overlook warnings about increased costs and threaten the reliability of our national electric system precisely when we're facing growing demand and escalating costs. Jim Matheson, President and CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, echoes concerns, emphasizing the rule's oversight of reliability. Similarly, Michelle Bloodworth, President and CEO of America's Power, stresses the critical role of coal-fired power plants in meeting rising electricity demands. Look out your back door at overhead power lines and poles. Do they look so old they're about the fall apart? A new UT Austin paper calculates the financial benefits of batteries and other DERs based on how they can delay the replacement timeline of grid infrastructure and also reduce how often a utility needs to buy market power at peak prices. It's a fascinating analysis, with some eye-popping numbers attached. https://lnkd.in/gVbraqky

Sharing some key ISP findings here! * SRP will likely need to double or triple resource capacity in the next decade to serve customers while achieving reliability and sustainability goals. This will be at an unprecedented pace ---it took SRP about 100 years to build its existing infrastructure! * When paired with firm capacity, solar and wind contribute to a least-cost portfolio while being able to help reduce carbon emission. * Hundreds of miles of new or upgraded transmission lines and nearly double the number of 500/230 kV transformers could be needed relative to today. #energyindustry #arizona

SRP is one of the first U.S. utilities to shift from a traditional Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) to an Integrated System Plan. The previous planning process is traditional for the utility industry and mainly considers what power resources will be needed. SRP’s Integrated System Plan is a holistic roadmap for its future power system that factors in evolving customer energy needs and achieving SRP’s 2035 carbon reduction goals.

Leveraging legal, policy, and regulatory expertise in clean energy to help forge collaborative solutions for the West
Today is an important day for continuing to build out a single, integrated western power market. Entities that have either committed to or indicated a preference for EDAM now represent more than 40% of total annual load in the WECC!
We are honored to learn that Idaho Power and Portland General Electric have indicated their preference to participate in the ISO’s Extended Day-Ahead Market (EDAM), which would increase reliability and benefits to customers. Learn more about the announcements: https://ow.ly/3ks450QZ9yB #EnergyNews
