It’s hard not to miss cat urine on your pillow or a serious catfight – but how well do cat caregivers recognize more subtle behaviors in their cats? This recent study assessed the reliability of cat caregivers as conveyors of accurate information about their cats. Veterinarians and cat behavior consultants often must rely on owner descriptions of their cats’ behaviors to assess health and behavior concerns. From this study, we can conclude that some cat caregivers may experience challenges in observing and describing their cats’ behaviors. This is one reason to ask clients to submit videos of their cats under multiple contexts. In addition, this study focused on the presence of behaviors that would be considered indicative of a positive relationship between the cats. However, missing behaviors that indicate stress or an adversarial relationship between cats would have a much bigger impact on cat welfare. If a cat is experiencing stress, fear, and anxiety in the home, they must rely on their human to recognize it and seek help. Lots of innovative feline tech solutions that have strong potential to assist cat caregivers in recognizing subtle changes in behaviors... a few to keep an eye on: sylvester.ai BistroCat Moggie Mella Pet Care Healthy Pet Connect ! #felinemedicine #catbehavior #veterinarymedicine #cats https://lnkd.in/g6dBc9Sb

The Five Freedoms ensure that we meet the mental and physical needs of animals in our care: Freedom from hunger and thirst by ready access to fresh water and diet to maintain health and vigor. This must be specific to the animal. For example, puppies, adult dogs, pregnant cats, and senior cats all need different types of food provided on different schedules. Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area. This means you should provide soft bedding and an area with appropriate temperature, noise levels, and access to natural light. If an animal is outside, it must have shelter from the elements as well as appropriate food and water bowls that will not freeze or tip over. Freedom from pain, injury, or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment. This includes vaccinating animals, monitoring animals, physical health, treating any injuries and providing appropriate medications. Freedom to express normal behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities, and company of the animal's own kind. Animals need to be able to interact with — or avoid — others of their own kind as desired. They must be able to stretch every part of their body (from nose to tail), and run, jump, and play. This can be particularly challenging when animals are housed in individual kennels. Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering. The mental health of an animal is just as important as its physical health — as psychological stress can quickly transition into physical illness. These conditions can be achieved by preventing overcrowding and providing sufficient enrichment and safe hiding spaces. Embracing the Five Freedoms supports the health and welfare of the animals in our care and provides adopters with the best possible insight into their personalities. That ultimately leads to more animals successfully placed in loving homes. #freedoms #animals #vets #welfare #onehealth #publichealth

Researcher | Licensed Clinical Social Worker | Director of Veterinary Social Work | Supporting the *mutual* well-being of people, animals, and their environments!
🐾 True or False: Social workers and other human health care and social service professionals regularly encounter clients/patients who are struggling with pet-related concerns. In my experience, and from experiences shared with me, the answer is “true”! (I’d love to hear any related thoughts and experiences in comments!) To help equip social workers and other human healthcare and social service providers to effectively provide support to people experiencing stress and/or barriers to care related to their animal family members, I am creating a free open access resource page for Open Door Veterinary Collective’s website, working title is “Social Work Hub”! I’d love any thoughts/feedback on what folks think is most needed/would be most helpful! Please feel free to comment or message me. For immediate help finding resources to support people with pet-related concerns - such as crisis fostering for pets, pet food banks, and accessible veterinary care - check out pethelpfinder.org! Connecting people to such supports helps keep human-animal families together and healthy. 🐾 (Pictured below is my pup Henderson approaching me in our woods; he is a huge fan of being with his family!) #humananimalbond #socialwork #socialworkers #publichealth #healthcare #health #family #families #community #primarycare #nurse #nursing #innovation #onehealth #onewelfare #socialdeterminantsofhealth #socialdeterminants #mentalhealth #behavioralhealth #casemanager #casemanagement #medicine #familymedicine

TEDx Speaker & Professional Technologist | Sustainability Enthusiast & Deputy Director, Impact Lab Clean Technology | Academician | Mental Health & Mindfulness Advocate
I was initially reluctant to give this interview, feeling perhaps that the #spotlight should remain firmly on the cause itself, not the individual advocating for it. However, as I #reflect on the countless tails we've wagged back to happiness and the eyes we've watched light up with trust anew, I recognize the #power of shared stories. Today, I'm donning a different hat—not just as a practitioner of #mindfulness and an educator but as someone deeply entrenched in the plights of #animal welfare. This journey with our furkids, driven not by the desire to rescue but by the privilege of being rescued by them, has shaped my #advocacy and my life. In the attached article from #TheSun, you'll find my full thoughts on why and how we need a united #effort to enhance animal #welfare. It's a call to all who care—because the stakes are high, and the need is urgent. Our furry friends deserve no less than our best efforts, and it starts with understanding and #action. Read, reflect, and join us in this vital cause. Together, let's make meaningful changes that go beyond temporary shelters and hit at the roots of abandonment and neglect. Your engagement and #thoughts would be invaluable as we continue to push for policies that ensure every animal gets the chance they deserve at a safe, loving home. #AnimalWelfare #UnitedForAnimals #RescueAndAdvocate #MindfulnessInAction #AnimalRights #EndAnimalNeglect #CommunityEngagement #BeTheChange #VoiceForTheVoiceless

New research highlights that human gestures of affection like hugging, petting, and playing with dogs may often be misunderstood by dogs, leading to stress and discomfort. A study analysing popular videos on media-sharing platforms found that many dogs displayed signs of anxiety and fear during these interactions, largely due to miscommunication. The findings suggest a need for better education in understanding canine body language and promoting respectful, cooperative human-dog interactions to strengthen bonds and avoid potential welfare issues. Let’s learn to communicate better with our dog companions! Read more about the study here: (https://lnkd.in/eQB_GEcr) #DogBehaviour #CanineCommunication #PetCare #HumanDogBond
