Commissioner at Scottish Land Commission, Crown Estate Scotland board member, Director at Jans (Isle of Skye)
The Community Land Leadership Group, Scottish Land Commission, met on 7th March to discuss and consider (1) Asset Transfer and (2) urban community land ownership. A review is being undertaken by the Scottish Government of the Asset Transfer processes and implementation, as part of a wider consideration of the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015. The results of the review are expected to be published by the end of the year. We also received a presentation from Carey Doyle, Urban Hub Manager at Community Land Scotland regarding the amazing work that is being undertaken in urban areas in bringing land in to community ownership. Over 100 case enquiries received in the Glasgow & Clyde Valley area and many from areas of resource deprivation. So much has been achieved in a short space of time with communities more empowered, confidence levels increased and issues of vacant & derelict land being addressed,

Executive Director, Housing Affordability Institute | Sr. Director of Housing Policy, Housing First Minnesota
In her writings for The Atlantic, Jerusalem Demsas has dug deep into the housing policy debate. Over the past 18 months, she has highlighted housing supply denialism, the housing scapegoat of 2023 (single-family rentals), and how municipal governments refuse to modernize their policies (despite the failure of the status quo). Her latest piece focuses on Minneapolis, highlighting the divide in the environmental movement regarding housing. Some see new housing as a necessity for a growing population. Others see new housing as a central threat to the climate. The anti-growth crowd fails to see the bigger picture: The Twin Cities isn't adding enough housing for a growing population. As Demsas points out: "The Twin Cities area added 226,000 people from 2010 to 2017, according to the Metropolitan Council, a regional government agency. In that same amount of time, the region added just 63,600 homes." Housing Affordability Institute was fortunate to have Demsas keynote the inaugural Housing Leadership Summit in September and she spent a few extra days in the Twin Cities working on this piece. #housingpolicy #housingcrisis #landdevelopment #homebuilding https://lnkd.in/gPQB4Y7k

The Noosa Plan’s 20-year timeframe envisions that the Council will ensure community well-being, economic prosperity, the protection of the Shire’s natural assets, sustainable population growth, ecologically sound urban development, affordable housing and a managed response to climate change. Council decision-making frequently ignores this breadth of vision enshrined in the Noosa Plan. And so the vision is lost. https://lnkd.in/geM-cwEr

Yesterday's meeting of the QLDC Planning and Strategy Committee highlights just how much change is in the pipeline for our District in the coming years. The Committee's agenda provides an overview of current and impending regulatory changes, which will have a significant bearing on how our town grows. Some of the proposals discussed include: - The currently underway NPS urban intensification variation (which proposes to 'intensify' height and density of development in some existing urban zoned areas); - The upcoming Future Development Strategy (which is a call for sites and areas that could be considered suitable for future urban development); - A revised Housing Business capacity Assessment (which informs development capacity across the District); - The Joint Housing Action Plan (which includes a range of initiatives to improve affordable housing options, including investigating potential disposal of QLDC land, tiny home and AirBnB regulation). All of these processes overlap and represent significant opportunities (and challenges) that the public can get involved in. Contact Graeme Todd or myself to get an understanding of what's coming up. https://lnkd.in/gTVtvXJK

A vision for a better Newcastle 🙌 We’ve launched our Council Plan 2024-27 – a plan for everyone in Newcastle to provide a better future for all our communities. It’s built around our three main priorities that will drive our wider plans around the ways we deliver services in the city, and work with residents and partners to improve outcomes and provide more inclusive opportunities for all. 🌳 Net Zero ❤️ Anti-poverty 🤝 Inclusive economy Cllr Nick Kemp, Leader of Newcastle City Council, said: “Alongside our commitment to delivering reliable services that offer value for money to residents, we know from having listened to residents and others in the city that these priorities matter to our communities who rightly want a bright and prosperous future for the city we all love. “Our ambition is to ensure Newcastle is a city that enables all its residents to reach their full potential, where opportunities and outcomes are equal and inclusive throughout our communities, and that we work in partnership to provide a cleaner, greener future for all.” Read more about our council plan - https://lnkd.in/eHzGVRfA

Thanks again to everyone who took part in our borough-wide ‘Let’s talk Swindon’ engagement exercise to feed back on our draft plan to progress these priority missions: ⚖️Reduce inequality – ensuring we make Swindon a fairer place, reducing disadvantage, making poorer areas richer and eliminating big disparities in life expectancy, education levels and social justice 🏠Build a better Swindon - creating a town ready for the challenge of the coming decades and understanding what facilities and infrastructure we need. Understanding our direct and indirect role in improving the town centre and in creating more affordable housing while supporting and brokering support from the private sector. 🌲Achieve net zero – ensuring we fully play our part as a council and a town in combating climate change. Working with communities to find new ways of doing things that help not hinder the natural environment. This report tabled at the Council’s Cabinet meeting on Weds summarises the feedback themes that will inform how the draft council plan evolves 👇👇 https://ow.ly/Xqhk50QOXTp

Housing is a fundamental human right and as such intrinsically integrates the challenges of both social and environmental justice. We are at a critical juncture as current housing systems prioritse the needs of investment funds and construction companies over people and the planet. We need to fundamentally rethink our approach to housing in order to produce housing that is dignified, durable, beautiful and adaptable, and made available for all, as a common good.
