Labour confirms plan to stop landlords renting poorly-insulated homes. Energy and Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband tells Labour Conference he is going to get tough on landlords who rent out 'cold and draughty' homes. Read more below to find out more.

Last week, National Low Income Housing Coalition released the 2024 #OutofReach report, which details the hourly wage that a fulltime worker (assuming 40 hours a week / 52 weeks per year) must earn to afford a modest 2-bedroom apartment at Fair Market Rent. Rhode Island's housing wage has increased exponentially over the past five years, even when accounting for inflation. This year's housing wage is $33.20 per hour, equating to an annual income of $69,054. Meanwhile, the average renter wage is $18 / hour and the state minimum wage is $14 / hour. "The most effective solution to addressing this issue is to build more homes across all income levels," commented HNRI Executive Director Melina Lodge. Sydney's minimum wage workers are locked out of housing. With just 0.6% of homes affordable across Australia on their pay, stability and security remain painfully out of reach. These are our city's unsung heroes. They give their all, yet face immense barriers when it comes to finding a safe, secure, and affordable place to live. But change is possible. By prioritising affordable housing, we can give our minimum wage workers a fair go. Community housing providers are ready to get to work to start fixing things, but we need the NSW Government's to invest in building more social and affordable housing. Because a city built on essential workers cannot thrive when that workforce struggles to find decent housing.

National Low Income Housing Out of Reach 2024 This year’s report shows that despite rising wages, cooling inflation, and low unemployment, low-wage workers and other renters with low incomes continue to struggle with the cost of rent. Given the inadequate housing safety net and increasingly unaffordable rents, it is no surprise that homelessness is on the rise. Addressing these challenges requires long-term federal investments in affordable housing and the Housing First model for ending homelessness.
