Don't miss tomorrow's webinar on standardizing state methodology to measure behavioral health spending. This collaboration between Milbank Memorial Fund, Freedman HealthCare LLC, National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD), National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors Research Institute, Inc. (NRI) and others, resulted in a paper outlining the recommendations of the advisory group I got to participate on and a code set. We hope these resources will help states measure the behavioral health portion of health care spending, and, ultimately, improve access, set targets for spending, and increase compliance. https://lnkd.in/eKz5Jn98

📚We are reading an excellent study from Brazil which highlights the harmful health impacts of court systems on survivors & how they deal with intimate partner violence, family violence and violence against children. Under the conceptual framework of Court and Perpetrator Induced Trauma (CPIT), Dalgarno et al describe how the spurious concept of ‘parental alienation’ is used against victims of IPV and CSA to attack their credibility and “turn the blame on the victim-survivor by making counter accusations against them”. 🏥This qualitative study found multiple physical health conditions reported by victims/survivors as a result of this trauma including “maternity problems, musculoskeletal, autoimmune, and respiratory conditions and a broad range of mental health implications including suicide and other trauma responses.” The authors suggest that urgent measures and further research are needed to understand the links between harms to health and the family courts and to protect the human rights of women and child victims of violence both in Brazil and beyond. Recent research reveals alarmingly low inclusion of intimate partner violence (IPV) content in the curriculum for Canadian medical, health, and mental health professionals. Despite the prevalence of IPV and its severe impacts on survivors, our healthcare providers are not receiving adequate training to recognize and respond to this issue, posing risks for survivors seeking help. We need to do better. Our healthcare professionals deserve comprehensive education on IPV to provide trauma-informed care and support to survivors.
