I connect people with nature🌿 so that we can restore 🌍 & rediscover who we really are💫 🐘Wildlife biologist, 👩🎓Career mentor, 📚Author & more!✨
How exactly does one become a wildlife biologist? My parents never went to college and I didn’t even know you could be a wildlife biologist. For real! I didn’t realize this was a career option even when I was in college. In fact, for most of my college years, I majored in theater dreaming of becoming a film actress. Every day, I'm taking you on a chapter-by-chapter adventure through my book, "Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology." AND there's a fantastic offer for you if you decide to grab the book in 2023 – a FREE mentoring session with me in January 2024! 🚀 Comment MENTORING24 below and I’ll send you the link. Chapters 1 through 4 are a deep dive into my personal journey in wildlife biology. I spill the beans on how I stumbled into this crazy career that I didn't even know existed until a certain moment (which, by the way, is a story you don't want to miss!). Chapter 1 takes you up to my college graduation, detailing the unexpected twists and turns that led me to become a wildlife biologist. I'm a first-generation college student, and my path wasn't exactly conventional. But hey, those unexpected twists and turns? They turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me for my career. I'm all about empowering those in wildlife careers - If I can do it, YOU can do it. I wasn’t the smartest, certainly was not the most science-y or outdoorsy at all, and I had no guidance from a young age. Just a love for animals. The next video will cover Chapter 2, all about post-college life. Trust me; there are more surprises and lessons waiting for you. https://lnkd.in/gar-zkfm

One thing that's important to me as a lecturer is ensuring my FE and HE learners leave with invaluable skills that are needed in the work place. Yesterday, my HE students were learning the ropes of QGIS - a mapping software commonly used in ecology to produce habitat maps or track animal movements. In the coming weeks, we'll be advancing their skill set to produce more intricate maps. #furthereducation #highereducation #QGIS #ecology #animalbehavior #personaldevelopment

I am taking a GIS class at Georgetown and our first assignment is to post a map we find interesting on LinkedIn. This is a map from iNaturalist and shows crowdsourced observations of the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus Novemcinctus) in North America. When compared to the established range from scientific literature and models, this map highlights the unprecedented rate at which the range of this species is expanding. In fact, the nine-banded armadillo is expanding its range at the fastest rate of any extant mammal species. It is the only Xenartharan currently found in North America and its rapid expansion has left many mammalogists wondering what allows it to expand its range so fast. I find this map particularly interesting because accurately understanding where this species can currently be found is vital. It helps us track its rate of expansion, predict where it may expand to next and protect any vulnerable ecosystems that may be affected by this armadillo invasion. I hope to use what I learn in this GIS class to track changes in land cover and ecosystems to help protect biodiversity. Source: Observations, Dasypus Novemcinctus. iNaturalist. Machine learning and careful observation suggest that some of the animals’ calls are specific to individuals, similar to a person’s name. Elephants exhibit a fascinating behavior of using proper names to address each other, a trait typically associated with humans. Scientists studying wild African savannah elephants in Kenya discovered through machine learning analysis that their deep rumbles are specific to individuals. In a unique experiment, researchers played recorded calls to the elephants in the field and observed their responses, noting their ability to distinguish if a call was meant for them. This research sheds light on the intricate communication systems of these remarkable animals. https://lnkd.in/d3Sshdck #Elephants #AnimalCommunication #ResearchDiscovery
