What could the #future of NZ #universities entail? What would big picture thinking look like? Rather than viewing the Gluckman University Advisory Group Review as a threat, what if we saw it as an opportunity? My friend, colleague and academic collaborator Chris Jones, Associate Professor in History at University of Canterbury died very suddenly and far too young, very recently. We worked together on a number of courses and projects, including the UC 150 History for which Chris very ably acted as chair of the Editorial board. In a world of far too many sole focus academics, Chris was a true intellectual. Our last collaboration was our response to the the call for submissions by the Gluckman University Advisory Group. We called it Universities Aotearoa Vision 2050 and it was our manifesto for change. At its centre is what we termed the Rutherford-Ngata model: "We identify a key weakness of current New Zealand graduates as a tendency to couple early specialisation with a lack of a substantial knowledge base. The result is engineers, lawyers, scientists, and social scientists who may understand their own subjects exceptionally well but who either fail to understand fully the society in which their skills are required or to understand fully the solutions offered by science, technology, and innovation. The Rutherford-Ngata Model has a simple aim: to produce literate science graduates, numerate arts graduates, and well-rounded professional graduates. It will do so by creating a common core of knowledge for all undergraduate students. Establishing this basic foundation will be an essential first step before any student progresses to a professional or general degree. In turn, graduates from this model who go on to form the backbone of the New Zealand research environment will, by drawing on a wider knowledge base, be able to offer solutions better suited to the New Zealand situation." We were going to expand this manifesto into a book; but as it was a true collaboration that will not happen. It will remain a manifesto, now offered into the public domain. [Note: this is the the thinking of two academics at University of Canterbury; it is in no way positioned or intended as representative of UC thinking or as a UC position]

One of the things I love most about working in the tertiary education sector is that my brain is always being challenged to think differently. In a time where international student caps are being hotly discussed, this HEDx podcast covers a great debate about how innovative and relevant higher education is - with some surprising thoughts from key leaders. The very nature of having a constructive debate such as this actually points to one of the biggest reasons why we need the tertiary education sector to grow - change shape, yes, but to continue to inspire students to stretch their thinking and find ways to express different points of view.
Professor Kerry London FCIOB as Deputy Vice Chancellor at Torrens University Australia leads industry engaged research in Australia's fastest growing university. As a private university with a distinctive mission, that has just turned 10 years old, Torrens has a strong focus on being innovative and relevant. But, more broadly, how innovative and relevant is global higher education? A subject of a fascinating debate recently held as part of Research and Innovation Week at Torrens with internal guests joining Kerry in: 👨🎓 Professor Alwyn Louw - Vice Chancellor, 👩🎓 Dr Claire Davison – Associate Dean, Business & Hospitality, and 👨🎓 Professor Matthew Mundy - Executive Dean, Health and Education and external and international guests in: 👩💼 Dr Samantha Ratnam - Leader, Victoria State Parliament Greens, 👨💼 Medy Hassan OAM FRSN FAIB – Founder/MD, Haus Holdings Pty Ltd, 👨🎓 Professor Stuart Green – University of Reading, and 👩⚕️ Victoria Saint – World Health Organization and Bielefeld University. They share diverse views about: 👉 Being for and against a broken system, or one remaining fit for purpose, 👉 Developing skills for work readiness or how to learn for the future, 👉 Solving problems with answers or helping stakeholders ask the right questions. What does it mean to be innovative and relevant in a modern university? Jesus’Love| Learning and Refining | UNESCO Chair in Equity, Social Justice and Higher Education Scholar| PhD Candidate| Research on GBV and Higher Education | Humanitarianism
I present to you this very enlightening Keynote delivered by my supervisor and mentor Prof.Penny Jane Burke on Transformative Reimagining: Sustainable Higher Education for Equity and Social Justice at the Universities Australia Solutions Summit 2024. She is graciously featured as the cover of the Campus Review magazine which has the entire address. Through this Keynote Professor Burke engages our collective imaginations and enables us to think more innately about how our acts of critical questioning challenges the status quo. Critical questioning will enable visionary thinking. There is the need for us to reposition higher education as a force for equity and social justice whilst we equally consider equity as a profound part of all we do. Through comprehensive funded systems and a call on governments to recognise their roles, we can expand our view on higher education. She draws our attention to the different forms of inequalities including gender-based violence faced by different factions of individuals in their higher educational pursuit. She proposes a multidimensional framework for addressing these insidious inequalities which include redistribution, recognition, representation, methodological rigour and human flourishing and wellbeing. This framework underpins the UNESCO Chair in Equity, Social Justice and HE University of Newcastle based in the Centre of Excellence for Equity in Higher Education at the University of Newcastle. The above is just a snippet of the entire keynote and it’s worth listening or reading to broaden your knowledge on equity in higher education. Please find below the link to the entire speech. https://lnkd.in/gPReCyxS #HigherEducation #Equity #SocialJustice #UnescoChairInEquitySocialJusticeAndHigherEducation. #TheUniversityOfNewcastle Photo by Edwina Photography
