I saw this quote yesterday in a report about veteran transition, and I couldn't help but wonder about the unintentional harm a quote like this might cause. When working with corporate partners to help them overcome a military skills translation gap, we often emphasize the people and leadership focused traits and competencies that veterans bring. Their learning agility, drive and determination, ability to handle stressful situations... And this quote in some ways says the opposite. The challenge that I think this quote means to evoke is that leaving any kind of institutionalized system and close knit culture is difficult; you have to re-learn every way of operating and interacting. It's managed with awareness, preparation, and personalized support. Building integrated systems that provide that level of support, connection, and opportunity enables companies and communities to see the best of what veterans and military families can provide. Those are the outcomes we want to get to.

Transitioning from military to civilian life is a monumental shift, filled with both challenges and opportunities. From our pre-recruiting phase through our military career and even the transition readiness phase, we often hear about the wonderful value our military experience brings to the table. However, there is a caveat that is overlooked. Our military experience works beautifully in the civilian space ONLY if we adopt the appropriate mindset for our civilian careers. "DEI" can surface a lot of assumptions and feelings in people. But at its core, DEI is a talent management issue. It's a fierce competition for talent and highly technical or unique skills out there, and the U.S. military is competing with a strong corporate sector that can make those skills worth their while. DEI is the foundation for how we can attract and retain talent, and how we will build and maintain the lethal fighting force that we need as we reoptimize for Great Power Competition. I think that the U.S. military is at the forefront of institutionalizing DEI concepts because we recognize it matters. It is a mission imperative that we build a culture and environment where our Airmen feel like they are not only included, but belong. Like they’re part of a team—one that they would want to go to war with and put their lives on the line for. We as leaders need to get down in the trenches and understand ALL of our Airmen (Soldiers, Sailors, Marines) and prove that we know their dignity and worth. Otherwise, they will vote with their feet. After 9/11, a small group of U.S. Special Forces rode into Afghanistan on horseback. Yep, horses in a modern war! The mission? Defeat the Taliban, which had strong control over the region. They had to partner with the Northern Alliance, a group of Afghan fighters, and together they achieved what many thought was impossible. Here’s what we can learn from their remarkable journey: 1. Adaptability is Key 🔑   Imagine being trained in high-tech combat only to find yourself riding horses in rough, mountainous terrain. This wasn’t something they’d planned for, but they adapted. That flexibility was critical to their success. In today’s world, the ability to pivot when things don’t go as expected is more important than ever. 2. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work 👫   These soldiers had to trust their new Afghan allies. The bonds they formed were crucial, and it reminds us how important collaboration is in achieving big goals.
