This is the perfect example of perseverance, determination, and relentlessness that can be used as a framework in nearly every situation, in sports or in another professional career. Prior to Sunday, Xander Schauffele had 6 PGA tournament wins, but zero of them major wins, despite having 13 top 10 finishes in major tournaments. 6 wins on the PGA Tour is more than most professional golfers will ever achieve, and alone may have earned Schauffele a spot in the hall of fame. However, the PGA icon had his eyes on something more than a solid career and legacy; to be a Major Champion. Throughout your career, you will experience success and failure. With failure, we know we need to roll with the punches, get back up, and keep going. When you succeed, raise your standards. There is no ceiling, there's only a higher level of excellence to achieve, in Xander's case, to be a major champion.

Imagine having a conversation with your peers and you asked them about Michele Jordan, Lebron James, Larry Bird, Mia Hamm, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, etc and they responded with "who"? You would be flabbergasted, wouldn't you? This is how I feel when I talk about the great Major Taylor. A man that doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Championship Teams - Boston Celtics The storied Boston Celtics won their 18th title this week. How do some teams seem to do better than others? They know how to win, expect to win, and have the desire to prepare to win. The Celtics had a good team committed to the purpose, goals, and continuous improvement toward their own true potential You always hear championship teams talk about “team chemistry”. This is key and comes back to belief, commitment, and trust. They all believed and committed to do their part.  They depended on each other, held each other accountable, and when challenges arose, (a key player injury) they always had the “next man up” attitude with zero fear. Do you have a championship team? Do you and your team believe in and have a clear picture of what true potential looks like?  Have you 100% committed to it? Do you trust everyone on the team? There are only a few things in your business that produce the most results. Do you and your team know what they are and are you focused on spending most of your time there? The Celtics had a bold goal, built the right team, committed to their belief, and trusted they would get there. Oh yes, and they had a good ole Indiana boy who assembled the Celtics 18th championship team.  Brad Stevens, Celtics President is a former coach who focuses on a few simple fundamentals and concepts. His deals were instrumental in putting the pieces in place to get there. His competitive coaching and management style mimics a former Celtics star, and also an Indiana native, who also helped the Celtics win 3 of their championships – Larry Bird. (The same Larry Bird who scored 54 against my high school team!)   So, the keys are: Belief and commitment to winning Assemble the right team Include a good ole Indiana boy 😉

And the winners checks should return to a normal level so the The R&A may spend more globally promoting the game as they are charged to do - same goes for the United States Golf Association (USGA) & PGA's. It is not any way in their remit to pay pros generational wealth in a single check. I keep hearing the from the pros themselves that they are playing for legacy and trophies not money - The for profits (PGA TOUR, DP World Tour, Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA)) & others that self fund (LIV Golf, The Masters) may increase the purses as much as they like and sponsors will support - but the organizations that grow the game from grass roots support so that the leaderboards are full of flags from around the world should have the support of the professionals to cap the purses - The prestige of the Major shouldn't be contingent of the amount of the winners check. As Martin Slumbers bravely brought attention to the fact the escalation of purses on Golf's most important organizations is unsustainable. In addition, a reduction in the overall men's purse would, like tennis, hopefully allow equal men's and women's payouts in the majors hosted by those organizations as they support both. On Tuesday I played two competitions at the same time. Before the "purists" come on saying "you can't do that, that's not in the rules", we did - we allow it in our golf society, and have done for years (even though I prefer not to when I can). One was a normal golf competition - 20 players, stableford, all playing against the course, best score wins. The other, matchplay - playing against one other person, quarter final, least shots per hole wins the hole, most hole wins, wins. A bit like you see on the final day of the Ryder Cup.
