At #GSMD rehearsing a neck break that's to take place in a car for one of the 3rd years films People often ask about the differences between stage and screen. there are of course but the core principles stay the same. As does the conditions, one is working with performers. There is an intention expressed through movement (everything we do is movement, breathing and speaking don't happen without it! ) happening in a 3d space, to tell a story. As with most rehearsals one is making do.. things don't match what they will be. The space isn't a car. It's 4 chairs. That requires a practical imagination. How does a car restrict my movement with in it. Am I wearing a seat belt? What does that do? Are there head rests? What do they mean? What does the seat do to my freedom of. Movement. What happens to my feet and legs in the foot well? what's in the way? Not all can be answered properly but they need to be considered otherwise one won't be ready when one set. It also requires that one actually pays attentions to those things we take for granted as a person, day to day. Reflections on an Oscar Found Among the LA Ashes Amid the heartbreaking devastation of the Los Angeles wildfires, a curious artifact emerged—a lone Oscar statuette, its golden sheen dimmed by fire and ash. No one knows who it belonged to. Was it a celebrated star whose name once lit up marquees? Or perhaps a lesser-known artist whose craft quietly shaped cinema? For now, its identity remains a mystery. This Oscar, once a symbol of immense recognition and unparalleled achievement, now sits as just a piece of metal—stripped of its glitz, its story silenced by the flames. It is a poignant reminder of the fragility of fame and the transient nature of even our most celebrated accomplishments. How many hands did it pass through? How many toasts were raised in its honor? How many lives were inspired by the artistry it once represented? And yet, here it is—forgotten, weathered, and anonymous. The image of this trophy amidst the ruins speaks volumes about the temporariness of human accolades. It prompts us to ask: What do we truly leave behind? Beyond the awards, titles, and applause, what remains when all else is stripped away? Marco Brambilla - Heaven’s Gate (Megaplex), 2022 Heaven's Gate is the latest in video artist Marco Brambilla's Megaplex series of video collages. A lavish and satirical take on the silver screen spectacle of Hollywood dreams and excesses, Heaven’s Gate both celebrates collective storytelling consciousness and satirizes its saturated glamour. The continuously looping video work ascends through the seven levels of Purgatory, each stage its own landscape of looping samples lifted from iconic moments of cinematic history. "In the work, Brambilla makes visible the concomitant tensions present in religion, industry and celebrity, ascension and fall, innocence and experience, vanity and pageantry, sexuality and awakening, simplicity and excess. Speaking the language of Hollywood’s dream factory, it communicates a nostalgia that feels at once familiar and uncanny and seemingly appropriate to the mood of 2020, where media saturation created a convergence of fact and fiction in a voracious cycle of introspection and collective anxiety. Heaven’s Gate likewise unravels into a dreamlike spectacle of virtual chaos. The work produces an overpowering labyrinth of labyrinths, a sinuous spreading visual maze seems to encompass the past and the future. In some way it involves stars." Sunday ruminations... In some of my doctoral research I note the intentional theatricality of the modern international school 'experience'. I pose this is a hypernym of a number of contributing factors such as: uniform, ritual, architecture, branding, 'story' and more. I argue this is ultimately produced to ensure and increase profitability. I have just started Helen Nicholson's fantastic 'Theatre & Education' which details Howard Barker's (interesting bloke) 1997 cultural manifesto (pp. 7/8/9). There are, in my opinion, some immediate comparisons to be drawn from his reflections on theatre and iterations of education today. As you read the following quotes, I wonder if you, like I, could imagine international education being labelled the same way. Replace theatre with education, let me know what you think...
